This is a popcorn chewing, worthy, thread. It just keeps goin on.

You're gonna need a bigger bag, Ed.

I nearly overcooked my pasta!

Perhaps just as well, as it's a year out of date!

If I delete very many of my attachments .............. there are going to be some unhappy campers.
Antique Cattaraugus knives, New York Knife Co.history, John Primble history, Fayetteville Knife Co. history, Gardner history, Charlow Barlow history, Old Knives thread.
Agree. Those threads have historical/research value.
The "What are you totin?' and "Whats your latest addition? " threads I mostly post in .... not so much.🙄😇
Do the closed for sale threads that have sold days, weeks, or even years ago "need" the pictures now? Probably not.
The system could be configured to auto delete those attachments, then archive or delete the thread.
No question that would free up a significant percentage of used image data, making it available for use again.

Same for the old 1,000 ~ 1400 plus pages in the "What Traditional Knife are you totin' Today?" thread. Does anyone care what someone who hasn't signed in for years had in their pockets from the time the thread was started to when they left?
Does anyone care what someone who is still active had in their pocket a year and more back?
Those who are still active could go to their post and ID the knife or knives. People would know what they had, just no picture.
FWIW not everyone can ID a knife make and model on sight. I can't a lot of "moderns". Even with a picture I don't know what brand unless I recognize it ... even then no clue on the model. 🙄

You can set the camera to take lower resolution pictures.
My tablet has a 50(?) MP camera. I reset the resolution to the lowest possible - under 1MP/ and 150KB or less (depends on background) per photo.
For the size of photos that can be displayed on the site, high resolution photos that can be blown up to 18x20 feet or more (movie house/drive-in theater screen size) before a loss in image quality isn't needed. As an added bonus the lower resolution photos take up significantly less hard drive an/or SD card storage.

I had 2,790/500 images (almost 600% over) when I was told I had reached my attachment limt. My data usage was only 350MB. (150 over the limit.)
Since none of my posts were in threads with historical interest (I posted mainly in the what are you carrying, newest addition, and a couple show them off traditional pattern specific threads) I just deleted everything prior to and including Friday last ... with a couple exceptions and the 60 plus that are in closed threads that do not have a delete option in Attachments, nor an Edit option in the thread to get rid of the attachment(s) in that thread's post. ☹️

After deleting what I could, I'm at "10%" of allowed attachments and "2%" of the allowed data.
(The system rounds the data to the nearest full percentage. 53 attachments is 10.3%, I believe. Not "10%")
If I could get rid of the attachments in the closed/locked threads, I would be under 3% in attachments, and under 1% in data used.

Yes. I saw a couple posts by people who are not Moderators or other officials of Blade Forums, saying "DON'T DELETE ANY FILES YET"
I was not born yesterday, and, despite what some may believe, I am not dumber than the average rock or doornail.
I understand the economics of a business, and of maintaining a website.
I was part owner and manager of a business with night clubs, a convenience store, licquor store, TV station, (crewed) Charter Yacht, and an Florida Keys Ocean Front vacation property for over 30 years. I created and maintained the charter boat and vacation property websites from 2000 to 2006, when we shut those operations down.

There is no question in my mind that the paid Basic, Gold, and Platnium membership levels will never again have free unlimited data and attachment again.
Therefore, I had no option but to get my data and attachments to under the current stated limits, with some "breathing room". (The limits may go down or up in the future.)

What little I post in threads like "OLD KNIVES" can keep their attachments.
What gets put in the what are you carrying and newest addition threads ... no reason to keep those attachments for more than a few days to a week. The postsare so far back from the current page, and long enough in the past, no one cares what I had in my pocket, or what I got.
If they do, I always ID what I'm carrying or received, so they will know. There just won't be a picture.

Yeah, I'm well aware of that. I was just pointing out what average image file sizes are these days, partly because they've increased a lot, and also because the vast majority of people don't go in and change the settings on their phone to limit image sizes to begin with (or even know how). And, some people want larger file sizes for reasons other than this forum - they just need to remember to downsize before they upload here, or host somewhere else.

I haven't seen anyone "complaining" about 1 mb image sizes being too small - that's plenty large enough (if not too large), but maybe I missed those comments.

No, not necessarily. With newer Android phones that use the One UI interface with the Android Pie update, (S10 phone and later I think) there is no option for changing resolution. The only thing the phone will do is change the aspect ratio. You need to use the edit function in the gallery to change picture resolution.

Yeah it's weird to me that people are complaining that 1mb is too small for pictures. 2 of my PC monitors have 1920x1080 resolution. A 24bit 1920x1080 JPG set to 90% compression should be only 211k. If you need a 30 megapixel image so that people can see the intricate details of something, link to it.

I’m gonna have to look at my what size pictures are on my iPhone, but I typically post from my iPhone because it’s easy to take the picture and add it to the post from my Apple photo library.

I typically don’t run multiple applications on my iPhone at the same time, because there’s not enough RAM to prevent some apps from reloading their content and losing my place, like in Reddit and YouTube. So now I’m trying to post with Imgur in a web browser and not the app.

That point I don’t really need to change the size of my pictures if I’m using IMGUR

I believe new iPhones have 3 options- 12, 24 and 48mp with a 24mp default.

Mine is a 14 Pro Max. As far as I can tell, I cannot change it from 12 megapixel standard pictures, or 48 megapixel for Pro Res those are the only options.

I have a lot more options for Video.

Those who are still active could go to their post and ID the knife or knives. People would know what they had, just no picture.
That's one way to look at it. On the other hand, when I google a particular pocketknife, I'm usually lead to posts of that knife on BladeForums, and can see pictures as well as read opinions on it. That can be useful.
Of course the historical old knives threads are valuable, but daily carry threads aren't just a waste.

I wonder if there is anything that could be implemented server-side to automatically downsize images to a maximum resolution, and be active by default? I guess that'd require some resources to run, but it'd end up making the experience a bit more predictable for the user in terms of images uploaded / space used. Maybe this could be done at some point to the already hosted images in order to reclaim used space? Might need to give warning in that case to give users a chance to download any images they want at full resolution before a cutoff date... And like you said, users could just upload through an external site if they really needed to show extra detail.

But then again, for those curious, this is what a 218kb 1920x1080 1440x1080 image can look like (EDIT: Oops, had to remove an image and correct my numbers there... still, I think the point remains.). Seems like it'd be plenty enough resolution for most sales threads or daily carry threads. I scaled this down in Windows using a Microsoft tool called "Image Resizer", part of their "PowerToys". I'm fairly certain there are equivalent, similarly free tools on Android and iOS.

One of the last pics I posted uploaded at 300k automatically compressed from the original 3.3mb pic, there's been some sort of auto-resizing happening for a while, at least for my Android device.

I mostly downsize my pics to around 250kb.
At some point in the past, when BF upgraded software and I first saw limits on attachments mentioned, I decided to try posting images directly to BF. (I had been using Imgur previously, but that seemed to be getting more difficult to work with than when I first started using it. And it was much easier to organize my photos in hierarchical style on my laptop than in Imgur.) But some quick approximations showed that I'd reach my limits relatively quickly unless I posted smaller images. So from that point on, whenever I save a photo from my old point&shoot camera to my laptop, I resize it from 2-3MB down to under 200kb, usually (640 pixels on "long edge"). I thought my "day of reckoning" for exceeding BF limits was going to arrive much sooner than it has (and apparently it should have arrived much sooner).

Am I understanding the relationship between number of attachments and total size of all attachments if I divide size by number of attachments to get an approximate average size of my images? If so, for me that would be 940MB/8812 attachments = .107MB per attachment or (multiplying by 1024kb/MB) about 109kb/image. That's even smaller than I thought my pictures were!

I always resize my photos for BF when editing them, not least since it takes my rotten internet connection so long to upload them anyway  It's rare that I use the phone on my Android camera, but when I do, I tend to upload directly. However, the photos don't have to be very large before they're too big to upload

I have found pictures using google. Then you click on “visit”. It takes you to blade forums and the image is gone from the thread. So were is it being stored?

I got it down to 230. My hand hurts. I'll delete more later.
I see you started with 576 at what point were you allowed to load more pictures, if you are there yet?
Just trying to figure out what Gold membership allows?
