It seems just as easy to manage your limits which means having to delete old pics or the third party option is always there but risks blowing up at some point like it apparently has before and results in deleted pics anyway at some point potentially.

I still don’t see how constantly having to delete photos is preferable to “they might go away at some point in the future, maybe.”

I guess because you’d determine what photos you’d delete yourself instead of it being a photobucket FUBAR.

I never mentioned or disrespected the moderators at all in any way.

Why would you ask me those questions? Ask the owner.

I respect the community, I just think asking the people already paying money to support the forum to pay more is wrong if some don’t pay anything. Then they treat those of us that do pay like we are morons for doing it.
Well, that sounds easy. Make pictures visible to paying members only. Sorta like access to messaging. The people that pay for pictures can both upload and view them. Free members can access text only. My guess is you’d see a big spike in paying members.

Not a bad idea from my hillbilly perspective.

Maybe, but at a certain point (and it wouldn’t take too long for a lot of folks, as evidenced by some of the numbers posted by members who found themselves suddenly way over quota this week) you’re going to hit a wall where you’ve filled up your quota with pics you don’t want to delete, and then you’re forced to delete stuff you’d really rather keep. Meanwhile, I’ve got thousands of pics hosted on Imgur that I’ve shared here over the years, and I don’t have to delete any of them, or worry about how many new pics I should post because doing so means that I have to delete that same number of existing pics. Yes, there’s a chance that Imgur (or any other hosting site) pulls some BS and causes a problem. But I think the risk of possibly, maybe having to deal with that someday (years?) down the road is worth it compared to constantly having to deal with a hard quota here, and regularly deleting content.

We should set up our own photo hosting site and direct members there. It doesn’t have to be directly integrated with the forums, but it does need to be stable. The value of this site come from the rich amount of information that we have all contributed. Destroying thousands of threads every time a photo hosting service decides to call it quits makes us too dependent on third parties and favorable winds.

I’ve been thinking about all this and have a few questions.

Would you pay more for a membership level that more accurately represents your specific needs?

What would you be willing to pay, per year, to post as many high-quality photos as you’d like on BF (in the easiest manner possible) and get some sort of guarantee that they’d be held indefinitely?

How much would you be willing to pay for year two? Keep in mind that you will either need to delete some photos from year one (that may honestly not be ALL gems), and that you may be required to pay more to post even more pics, should you so desire.

1000s of pics?

I think BF is laughably cheap per year. $30 bucks or something?

How much did your last knife cost? How badly do you want a comfortable place to share the experience? In dollars please?

You are, of course, welcome to collect knives on your own.

Don’t fool yourself. It’s not a matter of IF Imgur goes all Photobucket, it is WHEN… It could be a year from now, 5 years from now, or Monday.

This is a community. (Or was until the March 6th rebellion.)

I understand that this was meant as a joke, but like any good joke there’s some truth to it.

I just wanted to point out that for myself and likely many others here who were upset, BF is a very important community, and in large part that’s because of PICTURES.

I appreciate that a mistake was made and that Spark has taken responsibility for the issue and finding a solution. I hope we get good news soon.

I admit to also initially feeling a bit rebellious as well however.

I felt that the issue was treated very casually and I feel that cutting off pictures without prior warning/explanation, and taking HOURS to address questions that were being asked in this subforum, was bad form.

I also kinda wonder how many folks upped their membership/$$ on or around March 6th (like I did) when they got the automatic warning, only to discover that they still couldn’t upload photos. Those folks should be offered refunds.

I asked for a refund for upping to Gold for no reason, and that request was essentially ignored…

Still feeling a little rebellious if I’m being honest.

That’s true for sure

So it turns out that the attachment system was misconfigured (most likely by me) and y'all were allowed unlimited attachments (as many of you have noticed with thousands of them). I reconfigured it today and now a lot of you are running into the fact that you've uploaded hundreds of megabytes of images.

We've burned through 85gb of additional storage in 8 months, and have almost a half terabyte in image attachments alone. When the search goes down, often it's because we've run out of disk space due to the attachments eating up the drives. That's not sustainable.

For now I've throttled things as I investigate solutions. You can still host images remotely & share by using Imgur or similar sites.

Spark, you guys HAVE to make deleting image attachments EASIER. I have to go and delete hundreds of photos ONE BY ONE and then it resets to the first page after I do, forcing me to go all the way back to where I was trying to delete them again. It will take HOURS just delete enough images to make my account functional again. The forum software should allow multiple images to be selected and deleted AT THE SAME TIME. It's freakin ridiculous.

Thank you,

CW

Keep being a dick. It suits you. The moderator who did that, (wasn't me), was trying to calm things down while you continue to add oxygen to the fire.

We've given you quite a bit of latitude. Next step is mod sass. You decide if it's worth it for your symbolic victory.

Nobody is trying to diminish sincere and justified criticisms and observations. Your comments are not that.

None of the suggestions I've made here are sincere and justified? OK, then. Clearly I can't argue or I'll be banned. You win Blues. Have a wonderful day.

I'm assuming you posted in Tech Support or sent a PM to Spark.

I'm sure you know he's got a ton on his plate...and to be honest, he can be hard to contact even during normal day to day forum business just because of sheer volume.

I'm sure Spark Spark will address your matter as soon as he is able. We mods have no control of purse strings.

I think the symbiotic relationship between user content and the popularity of the forum keeps getting pushed aside in this discussion. Sure, we wouldn't all be here without Bladeforums...but Bladeforums would not be the thriving community/historical archive that it is without the members who have spent decades uploading the content that draws members here in search of that information.

Now those contributing members are potentially going to be asked to pay more if they wish to continue contributing?

Continue making relevant remarks and criticisms and none of us would have had to interact with you separately or privately. You already know this. Don't play the victim.

Neither I nor the other moderators are trying to stop you from making fair points and criticisms. Drop the snark and we'll have no reason to single you out.

That's all I'm saying. (No need for further reply.)

This is the biggest issue I have not the limited images .

Any idea on how to delete attachments in MOD closed threads? Specifically the original Carothers for sale thread.
