Well, I don't know if this should go in here or in the good, the bad, the ugly. If it needs to be moved, my apologies to the mods.
I received a message from a guy named Charlie (I'll keep his last name confidential) on youtube.com saying he was interested in my ZT 0302 I had up for trade. I asked what he had and he replied that he had a Spyderco Salt, Protech Godson and maybe another knife. I asked if he would send some pics of the Godson and I'd take a look. He replied with, "I don't have a camera or a camera phone." I told him I didn't do trades unless I can get a pic of the knife. Then he emails me and says he's headed to his buddies house to use his camera phone. When the photo arrived, I was surprised that it was as good as it was since it had been taken with a camera phone. I received a nice pic of 5 very high end autos, 2 of them being Godson's. He told me the other 3 autos were his fathers. There was a SS godson and a Damascus with San Mai inlays. I told him I would be interested in the Damascus. I also asked him if these were really his knives and not his father's, as I didn't want him to get in trouble for trading his dad's knives. He assured me they were his. I then email him back and ask to see the reverse side of the knife. I got a pic back, but all he had done was crop the original photo and rotate it 90 degrees. I started searching for this blade and came across a for sale post on knifeforums.com from back in May of '07 that had the EXACT same picture as this guy had sent me claiming to be his knife. By this time, he said he had already sent out his Protech. I email him with a link to that post and asked him what was up. He emailed me back saying that he did send me a protech, it just wasn't like the one I was asking for and that he told me that was his so I would trade him. He didn't think there was any difference. The one he sent was just a standard one with a black handle and satin blade, not the damascus bladed one with wood inlays. Well, as we all know, there is about a $300 difference (if not a little more) in these two knives. After I told him I wasn't going to trade, he got upset thinking he wasn't going to get his knife back. I assured him that I would send his knife back, but a lot of people would probably say screw you. You tried to screw me, I'll screw you right back. I then received an email from him this morning stating that he went back to the PO and got his package back. I would be surprised if there ever really was a package. This deal seemed fishy to me from the get go, as I'm a firm believer in the "if it's too good to be true, it probably is" saying. I also just noticed (thanks to the help of a fellow member who shall rename nameless
) that he has recently (I think today or yesterday) signed up as a user on this website using the name agedblade. So keep an eye out, he's been posting in the trade forums. I'm not saying this kid is a thief or wouldn't do a trade, but he's got some proving to do. Don't send a knife to him without receiving yours first! If you do and lose out, it's your own fault.
I hope this helps. If you're out there reading this Charlie, it's not about putting you out there as a thief or a liar. Just be honest about what you have to trade/sale and expect to prove yourself for a while.
