ATTN: CALIFORNIA residents, if you own ANY NON-METALLIC knives, READ THIS!!!!!!!

Let the record reflect that the CA bill on undetectable knives was introduced and carried through the Legislature by a conservative Republican.

It would be simpler if problems with knife law were only the fault of liberals. Authorities have been suspicious of knives, as weapons, at least since Caesar went for a stroll in the Forum, and a long time before anybody heard of a liberal.

I'm a little baffled here... maybe I'm not reading closely enough.

1) Where is provision made for knives that are produced of undetectable materials for reason of their corrosion resistance? Dive knives are legitimate for sporting reasons, and frequently of such construction that inclusion of a metal strip is impossible without radical design changes of substantial cost to the manufacturer. If titanium and other "non-steels" will pass through metal detectors, as some would have us believe, this could be a serious problem.

2) Who provides the metal detectors and does the testing? Surely the manufacturing companies cannot be expected to purchase them and pay for their care and operation.

3) What keeps pencil manufacturers from being prosecuted under this law? These are definitely "other instruments" without guards and capable of inflicting serious bodily harm when used for stabbing. They're also undetectable by metal detectors, unless the detector is sensitive and they include the "safety strip" (that metal bit that also serves to hold the eraser).

The basic trouble behind all of this may be that a politician can often advance his or her career by getting laws - any laws - put onto the books. Rarely are careers advanced by getting stupid laws off of the books. Hence we get a buildup of stupid laws. N'est pas?

The problem of we the citizens losing our constitutional right to keep and bear arms, indeed is not a Democratic or Republican issue. There are idiots in both parties. The facts are undeniable, and GENERALLY SPEAKING, you have to be brain dead to not realize that the it is the liberals (regardless of political party), that have a BIG BROTHER Gov't mentality. When your right to keep and bear arms is taken away, you can be absolutely sure that it will be the liberals that will have passed those laws. And by the way, it is only because we our citizena are armed, that we haven't yet been stripped of all our civil rights. Passing laws against non-metallic knives is a perfect example of how they are stripping us of our rights. They intend to continually eat away at our rights, little by little, like cancer. That way, the masses of a**es won't know, and if they know, they won't care.

This is one screwed up country! I'm sure the guy that stabbed the sheriff wouldn't have done it if his knife would have been illiegal to own. Surely he wouldn't have broken the law by owning an illiegal knife!
If he would have strangled him to death with a shoelace what would they do? Make you wear shoes without laces!

Pretty soon no.2 pencils will be banned. All this is sis someone with nothing to do, so he has to look important, and like he's doing something, so he goes and makes more laws. It's all it is, nothing more.

Sniff, sniff... you guys bring tears to my eyes.

It's good to know that you all aren't sheeple.

Now, I'd like to add a few things here.

<Fireprez>,
1.) Most stabbings in this country are in fact committed with a common everyday household screwdriver. Yes, a screwdriver. Not a Tactical serrated, guaranteed sharper longer, $1,000+ death weapon, but something that EVERYONE has.

2.) Laws like these are passed by legislators for one reason, and one reason only- to gain support from a specific group (in this case the L.A. county sherriff department) on some future issue, by pushing for something that said group wants NOW. All LEO's would like to see a totally unarmed populace, and I can't fault them for that (face it, any cop could die at ant time because some uneducated, respect lacking moron decides that he dosen't want a ticket. that in mind I'd like unarmed peasants too if I were a cop.).
3.)However well intentioned the law maybe, it WILL STILL BE ABUSED. And that is why we can't let laws like this alone. The more that are passed, the less our Constitution is a Force, and the more it just becomes so much paper and ink.

That said, just think about what you want this country to be like for your children, and their grandchildren, and then go out and do something about it. Remember that thinking or wanting something doesn't make it so.

I can't remember the last time I heard a new law or "issue" that was about, or even had a ring of common sense. Laws, like court cases, are no longer about common sense or even right and wrong; they are about what you can get away with under the written portion of the law. The reason that SO many moronic sounding laws are getting on the books is to combat this. Do you think that California (or any other state for that matter) would have even written up such a law if there were not those who would abuse the fact if it were not there (and a little future political wrangling to go along with it). Of course you don't. It makes me wonder...the case cited as the worst case senario for this bill doesn't make sense to me. Had the perp. made it through the injuries from the Courtroom Security would he have even been charged with the weapons violation. Maybe yes and maybe no...I've read of cases before where a defendant was in gross violation of a more minor law, and was not charged for it because the DA was going for the big one (i.e. murder or attempted murder).

AH! I think I'll move to Vancouver. (not that the knife laws are any better...but at least I could say "aboot" without getting hassled).

I found and deleted a general political spiel that had taken leave of this specific knife law topic, or of knife law topics in general, which was more suited for the Politics forum.

On this specific knife law topic, I say again that "liberals" and "socialists" and not where this bill came from. It came from "law enforcement" and was introduced and carried by a conservative Republican.
