Attributes of the Chiruwa Ang Khola

They both look great, Andy. Distinctly yours, too. I know what you mean about the rings- in most cases, they work out for me, but occasionaly one does not.

Without a guard, the ring plays an important part in blade retention for me. I don't feel comfortable with a Chiruwa's smooth handle. But Andy is right, it needs to be in the right place to work.
I don't think a normal human could destroy a standard Ang Khola unless it was a factory defect, or was run over by a fleet of trucks. The HI tang is very similar to the original Swamp Rat design.Which is similar to the venerable Randall design. I guess what I'm saying is that you don't need to worry about the tang giving out on you. You might give out before it does. ;)

If I had only one knife it would be a HI khuk. Probably a 18" AK or WWll.

I would agree IF I also had a small folder. But an 18" khuk as your ONLY knife? You really want to clean and filet fish, skin and gut small game, slice vegetables, shave tinder for a fire, etc. with a khuk? As much as I love my AK, I'd never go that far.

The WWII (including a good chakma and karda...maybe a SAK or folder in place of the karda) is really hard to beat. I've had scores of HI khuks, but my very special 18" WWII is still riding in my truck, spitting wood, and just taking everything i could throw at it. I guess when the SHTF, the well work worn Kumar-made 18" WWII will be the first thing I grab. Big enough to build a shelter, nimble enough to do the finer stuff, and weapony enough to drive back the zombie horde;)

Diver, you've had all the expert opinions here. Personally, I would get a standard 16.5" Chiruwa AK in the handle material that appealed to me, and use it. I don't recall if anyone has mentioned it on this thread, but Uncle Bill used to say that if you broke a CAK they would send you two as replacements! They are that strong.

Bottom line, they are so reasonably priced compared to any larger sized knife, that it would not be a big deal to later get either a standard 15" AK or 18" AK to get the different feel and nuances of the style. Or get all 3!

Most folks can't hold back at just one once they get their hands on the first model anyway.

Good luck and feel free to jump in if you have any more questions.

Thanks for all the help guys. You know I asked this question because I only want to buy one khuk. Just like the "one" Busse and the "one" Swamp Rat Knives that I bought!

If you plan to modify your khuk in any way the non-chiruwa handle is the way to go. I have both, of course, and like both very well.

i would think the ease of a full tang (chiruwa) would be the easiest to bolt some new slabs of something to, and off you go... i wonder if camillus micarta handles, for instance, could be adapted? or carbon fiber? ;) or ...

yeah. in the field, your blade may not break, but the handle might - split/crack explode... not so likely with the CAK, and readily dealt with if you have to. an AK? well, you're going to have to figure out how to hold that rat-tail :) then find a stick, and burn a hole into it, and then melt some plastic. doable, some might even say trivial... but ... i dunno. a CAK and some paracord/duct tape, a baton split piece of wood, and i could be up and going in some fasion in a minute or two. the burn in method, well, i think after i got a fire going, and managed to not destroy the tang or the heat treat... an hour or so?

don't forget to buy some beckers too, i'm considering a new model brute actually, if i can score one cheap - it's all about cheap :)

One must remember the deadly HIKV (HI Kukhri Virus) which is transmitted via your first purchase. infection rate approaches 100%. there is also a 75% chance of infection on your first look at a photo of a HI Kukhri. those, like yourself, who have started posting here prior to purchase are most likely to be infected pre-purchase.

symptoms include drooling at the sight of a version you do not (yet) possess, and an empty hunger to possess more and more kukhris.

there is no known cure, it's deadly effects on your wallet may be surpressed, but they are always lurking.

some of us, like myself have found that it can also force you branch out into desiring other ethnic weapons, starting with antique kukhris, then extending to such as keris, dhas, parangs, pedangs, klewangs, goloks, badeks, barongs, etc.

prognosis is not good. incubation period varies. resistance is futile. you WILL be assimilated.

Yes, reasonable men ask: is there anyone who owns just one HI khuk? munk

it's like owning one knife, one axe, and one boat for all things.

kinda hard to do if you're at all a packrat :)

but just ONE khukri? yeah, i could almost see that :) especially if i couldn't get back to my bunker, was at war/deployed, and down to my last one, the other 20 embedded in the bodies of my enemy, and i haven't had time yet go get them back ;)

oh, where was i... mmm. for me, i mostly use my large GRS, the better to not confuse myself with too many tools. i have the smaller and capable WSK now as well, and many other knives... so getting it down to a "single kit"... almost futile. what it really goes to is a current favorite EDTS - every day tool set. i know which axe, khurki, camp/woods knife, mora, etc i'd reach for for a given job.

friend of mine had a tree fall in the yard. changes are good, i'll aquire a band saw shortly, and i'll do most of the work of limbing the smaller stuff with the GRS, but let's face it (a sort of lumber pun), the axe is going to be better at some jobs. the saw even better (firewood? splitting stumps? use the saw)... sadly, i don't have any khuks yet that can outsplit any of the axes... except the hatchet. a heavy YCS would be lovely sometime.

Strangely enough, I introduced them to a guy at work who loves them, but has only bought one (a village baby Ganga Ram) about a year ago. He speculates about buying another (seax, WWII), but has not done so, so far.

I think he lives his khuks vicariously through me.

Eric.

for a very, very, very short period of time i owned only an 18" ang khola. that didnt last long though....

then, when i had to sell everything i had to fund moving, it was only that same 18" sher ang khola, and one 20" sirupate by amtrak. that didnt last long iether though :D

I'd never trust a guy who only owns one khukri. It just ain't normal behavior. At least around this joint.

I'm fortunate to have a small collection that spans several years but if I had just came here lately I wouldn't have near as many as I do now.
If I were just starting out I would have a brace of the 17" Foxy Follys and one of the original size, even if it were a special order.
The Foxy Folly was what I was looking to have when I made the model for the YCS.
A brace of the 17" Foxy Follys with YCS handles would be the cat's pajamas!!!! :D
