August 1st is Yorkshire Day! ;)

It has been a good Yorkshire Day at our house today .
We made some not too beautiful but very tasty Yorkshire Pudding .

It was great with some Beef Stew & Peas

Then it also goes great with some Cherry Pie filling .

All the time I was carrying these so it it was a Two Tews Wednesday .

Harry

It's great to see our American cousins making better Yorkshire puddings than us English :D With all the delicious food in these threads I'm going to put on weight just logging on here...

Thanks for the pic David :) I spent one of my birthdays in the Sheaf View :) It was just a quiet back-street pub at the time, which rarely seemed to have any customers. I was living just up the road, and liked the place. I celebrated with a crowd of friends, and the landlord was so pleased with the custom, he ended up getting drunk, and when we left, followed me out into the street, thanked me profusely in a thick Welsh accent, and presented me with a carrier-bag full of cans of beer! :D

Great story Jack! It's about 3 years since I was last there. A cracking real ale pub completely lacking the gentrification you come across nowadays. Completely lacking in carrier bags of free ale to but you can't have everything... :D

Happy Yorkshire Day!
I'd gladly meet you at the Maltings in York to hoist a few! I'd be wearing the White Rose of Yorkshire on my lapel and have my Real Lamb Foot in my pocket! If I were there!
Background picture was from our trip to the UK in 2008. My son was attending the University of York and the Maltings was one of his hangouts. I'd love to get back there some day soon.
Not an entry, Jack. Thanks for being a good friend and a great member here.

What a day that would be Gary :) I was only thinking of the Maltings yesterday, after seeing a good photo of the interior in a book I was reading. It's a while since I was last in, and I must make up for that ;)

Here ya go chaps. A little reminder of the Maltings pub in York  from a visit a few weeks back.

I started Yorkshire Day bright and early, with a breakfast of Leeds Bread Co-op sourdough toast and Yorkshire tea! ;) It's a bit too warm for tweed caps at the moment here, but I felt obligated to wear one of course :D

So did more than 400 other folks, who assembled in Leeds Kirkgate Market to beat the world record for the most flat-caps worn in one place at the same time! :D

I had already arranged to visit my home town of Sheffield though (where they haven't really organised a great deal since the invention of the Bessamer Converter). At Leeds train station, some smartly dressed folks with white rose button-holes were handing out free Yorkshire Pudding and bacon wraps to commuters. Since, shamefully, I was the only bloke in the station wearing a flat-cap I got snapped by the paparazzi accepting one of the gift breakfast snacks! ;) Still had room for coffee and doughnuts on the train though, which we shared with the hungry-looking train guard.

Arriving in Sheffield, it was a little too early for the pub, so we had a look in the Millenium Galleries, which had even less knives on display than usual. They did, however, have some knives on sale from Michael May and A.Wright & Son in the gift shop. I bought the first of many books there

Across the road is Sheffield Scene, which also had a good range of A.Wright & Son knives, something I've been encouraging for a couple of years, as well as some others bearing the IXL and Joseph Rodgers marks. I bought some Yorkshire items for the winner of this giveaway, and more local/cutlery history books! My bag was already heavy and bulging

A few doors along, opposite Sheffield Town Hall, another shop also had some pocket-knives on display. Nice to see, but a shame they can't spell, or just copy what it says on the boxes/knives!

After a coffee, and a visit to yet another bookshop, it was time to catch the tram down to the Kelham Island area of Sheffield, and The Fat Cat pub (https://www.thefatcat.co.uk/) :) On the tram, I saw my first other flat-caps of the day! o_O Not many of them in "Little Kelham", which is being gentrified appallingly o_O Not that it's made for new customers in The Fat Cat though, because the new residents have brought their own fancy bars and restaurants. We were the first customers in, but then it was just after noon ;) First pint was 'Zest For Life' from the local Don Valley Brewery.

I was hungry for pie though! :)

Pie came! :)

Not quite as good as usual, but still tasty. Nagging in my ear caused me to resist the apple crumble. I also forsook the new Brown Ale from Timothy Taylor's I rather fancied o_O Think I'll be going over on my own next Yorkshire Day!

There was a pub up-river I wanted to visit, The Gardener's Rest, home to The Sheffield Brewery Co, and the old 'Blanco' factory.

We walked across the famous Ball Street Bridge.

And along the banks of the River Don

Sadly though, the Gardener's Rest was closed! :( And on Yorkshire Day too!

What a great adventure Jack! Thanks for sharing your Yorkshire Day exploits. Especially the get together on Leeds market! Something tells me I'd never see anyone with red rose button holes handing out free butter pies at Preston station on Lancashire Day...:D

-David.

Thanks my friend, I don't think they need to give out free ale at the Sheaf View anymore from what I hear. Despite my liking for it, I was rather surprised when I heard it had become a bit of a real ale hot-spot ;)

Nice pic of The Maltings, I'll have to go over for a visit soon :)

I think they probably have more sense in Lancashire David! :D

Hey, I'm glad it made it to you Taylor, and I hope you enjoy using the Lambsfoot :) That is the first time I have ever included any candy in a package (actually the first time I bought any in about 25 years), it looks like it might have melted some! Maybe it wasn't the best idea! The liquorice 'Pomfret Cakes' or 'Pontefract Cakes' are very old-fashioned, even when I was a kid only old people bought them, but they are very traditional to Yorkshire - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontefract_cake I was born next to the Henderson's Relish factory in Sheffield - it isn't really 'spicy', but does have spices in it - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henderson's_Relish

I have been reading about Californian history and swapping tales with Dave @Horsewright, fascinating stuff :) You have some great heritage Taylor

My son snatched up all the candy! :D Everything else is mine! I'm gonna give the relish a try! My grandfather tried the pomfret cake and liked them! Me and my son not so much LOL!

The Lambsfoot is a perfect size. I love the snappyness and walk in talk is perfect. I gave it a strop and it's sharp!

Be on the look out for something headed your way!

I hope the candy was OK, it was all made in Yorkshire! :D Those Chunky Kit Kat bars were so popular when they came out about 25 years ago, workers at the factory were working round the clock to keep up with demand! :D Good for your grandfather, I like liquorice too :) I got you some other old-fashioned sweets, but they turned into a sticky mess as soon as I bought them! :D

I'm glad you like the Lambsfoot, and look forward to seeing you in the Guardians thread. There's some great tips there. Most folks flush the joints

That's very kind of you, but don't be too generous please - anything with a stated value above $30 attracts loads of tax and import charges

Congratulations on your first Lambsfoot Taylor :)

Flushed the joints and it has smoother already. You will definitely be seeing me in the Guardians thread!

LOL! Yeah, I used to like them, I don't really eat candy anymore, though I did enjoy the US candy bars Barrett kindly sent me last year :) That's what gave me the idea

Cool  I hope you'll really enjoy using it Taylor :)
