It's great to see our American cousins making better Yorkshire puddings than us English

Thanks for the pic DavidI spent one of my birthdays in the Sheaf View
It was just a quiet back-street pub at the time, which rarely seemed to have any customers. I was living just up the road, and liked the place. I celebrated with a crowd of friends, and the landlord was so pleased with the custom, he ended up getting drunk, and when we left, followed me out into the street, thanked me profusely in a thick Welsh accent, and presented me with a carrier-bag full of cans of beer!

Great story Jack! It's about 3 years since I was last there. A cracking real ale pub completely lacking the gentrification you come across nowadays. Completely lacking in carrier bags of free ale to but you can't have everything...

Happy Yorkshire Day!
I'd gladly meet you at the Maltings in York to hoist a few! I'd be wearing the White Rose of Yorkshire on my lapel and have my Real Lamb Foot in my pocket! If I were there!
Background picture was from our trip to the UK in 2008. My son was attending the University of York and the Maltings was one of his hangouts. I'd love to get back there some day soon.
Not an entry, Jack. Thanks for being a good friend and a great member here.

What a day that would be GaryI was only thinking of the Maltings yesterday, after seeing a good photo of the interior in a book I was reading. It's a while since I was last in, and I must make up for that

Here ya go chaps. A little reminder of the Maltings pub in York

I started Yorkshire Day bright and early, with a breakfast of Leeds Bread Co-op sourdough toast and Yorkshire tea! It's a bit too warm for tweed caps at the moment here, but I felt obligated to wear one of course

So did more than 400 other folks, who assembled in Leeds Kirkgate Market to beat the world record for the most flat-caps worn in one place at the same time!

I had already arranged to visit my home town of Sheffield though (where they haven't really organised a great deal since the invention of the Bessamer Converter). At Leeds train station, some smartly dressed folks with white rose button-holes were handing out free Yorkshire Pudding and bacon wraps to commuters. Since, shamefully, I was the only bloke in the station wearing a flat-cap I got snapped by the paparazzi accepting one of the gift breakfast snacks!Still had room for coffee and doughnuts on the train though, which we shared with the hungry-looking train guard.
Arriving in Sheffield, it was a little too early for the pub, so we had a look in the Millenium Galleries, which had even less knives on display than usual. They did, however, have some knives on sale from Michael May and A.Wright & Son in the gift shop. I bought the first of many books there
Across the road is Sheffield Scene, which also had a good range of A.Wright & Son knives, something I've been encouraging for a couple of years, as well as some others bearing the IXL and Joseph Rodgers marks. I bought some Yorkshire items for the winner of this giveaway, and more local/cutlery history books! My bag was already heavy and bulging
A few doors along, opposite Sheffield Town Hall, another shop also had some pocket-knives on display. Nice to see, but a shame they can't spell, or just copy what it says on the boxes/knives!

After a coffee, and a visit to yet another bookshop, it was time to catch the tram down to the Kelham Island area of Sheffield, and The Fat Cat pub (https://www.thefatcat.co.uk/)On the tram, I saw my first other flat-caps of the day!
Not many of them in "Little Kelham", which is being gentrified appallingly
Not that it's made for new customers in The Fat Cat though, because the new residents have brought their own fancy bars and restaurants. We were the first customers in, but then it was just after noon
First pint was 'Zest For Life' from the local Don Valley Brewery.

I was hungry for pie though!

Not quite as good as usual, but still tasty. Nagging in my ear caused me to resist the apple crumble. I also forsook the new Brown Ale from Timothy Taylor's I rather fanciedThink I'll be going over on my own next Yorkshire Day!
There was a pub up-river I wanted to visit, The Gardener's Rest, home to The Sheffield Brewery Co, and the old 'Blanco' factory.

We walked across the famous Ball Street Bridge.

What a great adventure Jack! Thanks for sharing your Yorkshire Day exploits. Especially the get together on Leeds market! Something tells me I'd never see anyone with red rose button holes handing out free butter pies at Preston station on Lancashire Day...
