I am currently looking for a folding knife in aus 8 perferably but not limited to a non-combo edge for around $50-$70 range and handle material is not necessarily important in this case. I have seen some options and was wondering if anyone had some suggestions. some of the knives I am looking at are the cs ak-47, the SOG trident, the boker tactical action II, the rat folder and the kabar dozier folding hunter. But I am very open to other suggestions. Thanks

are you open to similar steels to Aus 8 such as 440c? if so then id suggest

Bladetech Ganyana - Aus 8
CRKT M21/16 -04G - Aus 8
Boker G4 - 440c
Boker Plus CLB Direkt - Aus 8

The Trident did not work well for me. Not sure about the Boker. But everything else is a good value.

I actually bought an Outdoor Edge Grit-Lite for $20 with an AUS-8 blade. It comes with a good edge (out of box), takes a great edge, and has a great grip. For $20, it's an astounding deal.

Looks like in that price range you could get a CS American Lawman which is great in my opinion. Plus I think the heat treat on all of the CS aus 8 is real good.

I'll tell ya bud a good knife in general is the Spyderco Tenanious.....IT's just a damn good knife, one of my favs (well worth the 35$ price tag). I personally feel that the 8cr13mov is a better steel than Aus 8 too. If your dead set on Aus 8 then I would recommend something from Cold Steel.

good luck

Ontario Rat folders are very popular and good quality knives that us aus8 steel and go for around $30.

 Great knife, good size. The lock is bomb-proof.

I am attracted to the spyderco tenacious since it has a very proven performance and just seems like a very tried and true pocket knife. It seems to lack all that clutter knives seemed to get covered in to sell to people. I have heard good things about the cs aus8 heat treats and the tri ad lock is a big selling point to me. I have owned and liked some SOG and the trident seems like a good knife. Can I ask you why it did not work for you vandguard?

Ok let's say we put the lawman, the rat 1 folder and the sog trident head to head... any distinct winner?

Either the Lawman or the RAT-1 would be an excellent choice. The RAT-1 is a bit better slicer due to the thinner, full-flat grind blade, while the Lawman has (IMHO) a more comfortable/grippy handle and a more versatile blade shape. Both are well-built, robust knives, although if you're planning on doing any silly, really-should-just-use-a-fixed-blade stuff with it (e.g., batoning), I'd give the advantage to the Lawman since its lock is better able to withstand and adjust to such things.

They are essentially the same composition. According to Spyderco's Sal Glessar, AUS8 has a bit better corrosion resistance, but the edge retention of the two alloys is about the same, given the same hardness. I've done a bit of side by side manila rope cutting with the two alloys, and I certainly cannot tell them apart by edge retention.

Cold Steel's heat treat of AUS8 is excellent, if the one I bought is any measure. I measured the blade hardness at 59HRC.

As previously indicated CS knows what their doing with AUS 8. Love my AK-47. Too heavy to wear with slacks but can work with jeans, work pants ets.

Unless you're set on the wave-style opener and extended pommel of the AK-47, I've found the Lawman much more easily carried (I own both). Regardless of which you choose, CS does a very fine job with their AUS 8.

Thanks for all the help I think I may go for the lawman when the next paycheck arrives I am sure I will like it and if it is not JUST right then oh no I will have to go buy another knife.(hope ya"ll picked up on the sarcasm) I have yet to own a CS product so this will be a new experience in that sense as well.

Why is this your choice of steel?

I'd think generally people choose a knife based on price and it just happens to have AUS8 steel. I've never heard of someone who would seek it out.

If you change your mind, Kershaw or Spyderco should have something in your price range with a better steel.
