Tait, what about the way AEB-L grinds did you not like?

With something nice to grind, like O-1 or S35VN, the steel grinds cleanly, and gets hot slow enough that I can back off when I feel it warming up and don't burn my fingers.

AEB-L feels too gummy to me, and develops big burr. More importantly, it heats up quickly and transmits the heat slowly, so that, by the time I feel it warming up with my fingers, it's too late - I have to drop it or burn my fingers. I started a thread about steel preference back in February (here).

So this is a purely personal preference - it does not mean it's a bad steel, I just don't personally like it.

It's cheap enough to try - Alpha Knife Supply has some decent pieces for less than $10.

I've also looked for the cheapest quality SS in the past and in my opinion 13C26 from Admiral is the best balance of cost and quality. It was developed for razor blades and takes a very fine edge and is easily sharpened. H/T is fairly simple also. I use the temps and times reccomended by Sandvik, cryo in dry ice and alcohol and get RC 59-60 with no problems. The only drawback is that I've heard about some people getting bars with big bows in them. I have never had this problem myself. I've ordered it 3 or 4 times and the bars are always as straight as they are from other suppliers. Hope this helps.
