AUS8A vs CTS-BD1

That was a pretty good site. Thanks. The lists mirror my own observations and those of many other people. I liked the comments about N680 as I prefer it over H1. The comments about AUS8 are spot on. It is not a super steel and 440B is not up to 440C but does have its uses. The reason some people get good results out of a lesser steel, as pointed out has to do with blade geometry and heat treat, as compared to other blades, more than anything.

A lot of steels by Carpenter are just clones of other steels bearing a new name for marketing purposes as an American company...

BD-1 is identical to GIN-1(Gingami-1) out of Japan

BDZ-1 is identical to 440A only a little lower in chromium

B75P is identical to BG-42

With that being said Carpenter needs to develop signature steels of their own but they do own the rights to Latrobe's BG-42 steel now.The BD-1 steel should be a little better than AUS-8 in edge holding. In edge taking though the AUS-8 will produce a finer edge.

CTS-bd1, double vacuum melted steel

I don't what that means but I presumed it translates to a very clean alloy that makes a tough, sharp knife.
BD1 has more chromium and carbon then aus8.

It might have a slight advantage if not equal to aus8.

It's not going to win any awards for edge holding but it's very corrison resistant and should sharpen up great.

It's the old Japanese Gingami 1 formula.

Haven't tried it yet.
I've tried the aus8 and it takes a great edge but it's no VG10 or 154cm, and it's safe to say that neither is bd1.

yeah everything is relative. it's funny, what is considered space age material 10 years ago are crap now and the market is driven by the constant pursuit for marginally better material. i'm all for constant improvements, but the i think people are getting too obsessive to the latest & greatest steel. .

I like steel upgrades because then the ''latest'' ''greatest'' causes the previous steel to be dumped at fire sale prices. If AUS8 was such junk I doubt that C.S. would have sold so much of it for so long. When they switched over to the new steel I loaded up on the AUS8. I got a lot of tough inexpensive knives that I can be Neanderthal with and have next to zero worry of breaking or losing one, as I have their replacements waiting. Will I get blades in the newer steel ?, of course, we all likely will sooner or later. I have or had a lot of the jazzy stuff, D2, VG-10, S30V, AUS8 coming out of my ears, multiple 1095 ESEE's and much more, yada yada sis boom ba. I see it as that all cutting tools will need sharpening sooner or later. If sharpening is a concern for me on any given day, I can make a different blade choice. I am generally comfortable with paying up to around $150.00 for a new folder, after that it had better really tickle my toenails or I pass. The new Colossus or whatever its called is very attractive to me. But at around $240.00 up here I don't really need it THAT much. Just my view, which we all have. Other views aren't ''wrong'', they just make more sense to the individuals perspective.
