AWESOME Emerson fit and finish

That is one great knife. almost bought one myself, but decided to grab an Apache instead. kinda wish there was a super spec war but with a wave too.

Sometimes i think knife folks forget the whole point of a using knife. And that is good ergos and design and to cut stuff. If it all happens to be put together perfectly as well, that's icing on the cake. Now on safe queen customs i get the demand for extreme fit and finish and perfection. On a tool knife even a higher priced tool working knife it really doesnt matter, so much. Unless of course one just wants to look at it and nit pick it. If one decides to cut something with it....none of those critiques have any bearing at all. Calling someone an apologist for not caring about cosmetics when they use their knife to cut stuff rather than looking at a tool designed for use, like it's art...seems silly to me. Too each their own though...takes all kinds and view points to make the hobby interesting.

^ I could be using the term "fit and finish" incorrectly then.

I guess I should say the "fit" is awesome, and the finish is just fine for me, too.

BTW, you are the only person I've heard of that has a Ulize too. That, also, is a great knife, and what you said makes sense. The "finish" on my new Emerson is not as fine as on the Ulize, but the "fit" is just as good.

Thanks for the clarification, and that is not a statement tinged with sarcasism. I was using the two terms interchangeably and that was incorrect.

I will say I don't understand why some people single out the water jet marks on the liners of Emerson knives and complain about them, but we all have our own opinions. Nothing wrong with that in the least.

To me it adds character, and they are more than just a knife to me. I feel a little more secure with an Emerson in my pocket than any of my other knives. Perhaps it's the wave - but that is a different thread - but it's the truth. At least for me.

I wouldn't even mention "machining marks" on places that are not in contact with your hand, that is superfluous to the duty of the knife; the cardboard won't care if you know what I mean.

Apologist? Please. I don't complain if the shovel I just bought has a nick on it, the first time I put it in the rocky earth it's going to be moot point.

Again, great looking knife, thanks for the pictures.

Not everyone who critiques finish is just interested in safe queens. I've owned working knives just as good as Emersons that had immaculate finish, and were priced comparably. Given that almost every other production company in Emerson's price range pays better attention to finish, I don't consider it nitpicky at all to bring attention to shortcomings. And suggesting that people who do are people who don't use their knives or don't care about the usability of knives doesn't help the Emerson brand at all, and makes Emerson owners look like whiny, misguided purists.

And there are people who can't walk past a painting of a masterpiece hanging on the wall without "straightening it".

I feel sad for the torture those people go through in life.

I imagine the ultimate hell would be a perfectionist with an electron microscope.

Similarly, I feel pity for those who don't know cost-cutting and indifference when they see it.

Thankfully, no electron microscope is needed to see it on Emerson knives.

A sarcastic hypocrite! Even better.

You and people like you are the ones giving a bad name to people who love Emerson knives.

Have you ever purchased a garden tool, like a shovel or a rake; a tool designed to do a specific job that did not require perfection in machining to do it's job in an world-class fashion?

My sarcasm is in the absurdity of your point. MOST Emerson fans use their knives and could give a rat's patoot if there were machining marks on the liners etc., you are in the great minority here.

I am an Emerson fan who uses his knives. This discussion wouldn't even exist if the prices for these knives were different. If you've got two similar garden shovels, one with a sloppy finish but equally expensive, are you going to take the one with a sloppy finish?

Let's not pretend that Emersons are geared towards users the same way garden tools are geared towards users either. Emerson himself has admitted that the reason why his chisel grind is left-hand oriented is so that the knife "looks more attractive in photos". These knives are primarily for collector consuption.

I imagine the knives are priced based on the materials and machining and labor costs along with enough profit to keep them a going concern.

You are the only "Emerson Fan" that is crapping up this man's thread when he was just happy to post pictures of his knife.

Why can't you just be happy for him that he has an Emerson that he likes and is proud to show off?

I enjoyed the OP's pictures, and I like knives. You?

All other comments aside, THIS is an excellent point. If folks want to start a thread to complain about issues, real or not, they should do so. The OP is excited about a new knife, which looks awesome by the way. Why spoil their happiness?

It does not matter how much you have spent, it is how you act as toward others and as an individual that sums up your substance as a person; the measure of your interaction with other human beings.

No amount of spending will make you a better PERSON. The world does not count on you to call BS on every person's thread, but thanks for your vigilance.

If that's the case, then there are certainly people on this subforum who are bad people. They waste no time in classifying people who don't own Emerson knives, or choose not to use their Emersons, as people who have no grounds to comment on their quality.

I don't think you are a bad person - just in this case you are out of line in my opinion.

You enjoy the knives, let other people enjoy the knives even if in your discreet (ideally) opinion they are not on track. If you must "help someone" out, do so gently.

Retrace your posts in this thread with an open mind, and truthfully, would you still post the same vitriol?

You can be and often are a valued member of the forum, I have seen it. I would not wast my poor fingers if I did not believe that.

Because of this.

It's a middle finger to people who have leveled perfectly reasonable criticisms of Emerson knives, and only serves to turn off people who are on the fence. The icing on the cake is that the provided photos in no way validate the point.

If this was a thread praising the Super SOFCK, then there would be no reason to comment.

BUT the OP did not start this thread to level criticisms of Emerson. The thread was started to celebrate the purchase of a new knife. Beauty, be it justified or not, is in the eye of the beholder. Nobody should try to taint the OPs pride in their purchase.
