AWESOME Emerson fit and finish

Not everyone who critiques finish is just interested in safe queens. I've owned working knives just as good as Emersons that had immaculate finish, and were priced comparably. Given that almost every other production company in Emerson's price range pays better attention to finish, I don't consider it nitpicky at all to bring attention to shortcomings. And suggesting that people who do are people who don't use their knives or don't care about the usability of knives doesn't help the Emerson brand at all, and makes Emerson owners look like whiny, misguided purists.

fair points, but you picked and choosed the one quote from me to debate over. youa re assuming too much from my post and here is way...... in fairness my post has to be taken as a whole as i am not a politician, nor a wordsmith by any means. i'm a good old florida boy working man. as long as you saw my points, we are are on the same page..that is all that matters.

jmclfrsh, Awesome purchase and congrats! Thing is a beast of a knife!

I think the whole mgf and finish discussion has twisted this thread. Can we just go back to the vibe OP has intended which IMO is " Check out this bitchin knife I just got"?

Agreed completely! Let's see some comparison pics, jmclfrsh! The super SOCFK doesn't get a lot of coverage or love. If a Super A model was released in SF I would crap myself.

More pics and positive posts, less bullshit, fellas!

Thank you for the positive responses, much appreciated. I like it even more today than I did yesterday.

I didn't mean to misuse knife terminology and evoke such passionate responses by some. I know more about racing motorcycles and archery! But for those that defended me for just being a guy that really likes his new knife and felt a need to share, thank you.

And you guys were right... it IS a beast!

A comparison with my Super Commander and my EDC CQC15. I am EDC'ing the SSOFCK right now though, but my 15 knows how I feel about him and is not as insecure as my dog is.

The whole problem with this thread was the title of it. If the title had simply said "Awesome new Emerson" & had a bunch of pics nobody would have had a problem with it.

To say it has "awesome fit & finish" & then call anybody who doesn't agree a troll is just asking for trouble however. Emerson has never claimed to have awesome fit/finish & anybody who has collected knives for a number of years, spread out among different brands quickly realizes that there are many cheaper knives that have far superior fit/finish to any emerson (especially for the price). My ZT 0801 is a great example of this. With it's solid titanium build & razor sharp Elmax blade its fit & finish is absolutely outstanding & I think I paid $120 for it new.

The fit and finish issue is a moot point. all of you claiming that all other knife companies have better f&f have your heads in the sand. I have had several knives in the same price range as Emerson that had the same issues with machining marks. Machining marks are the ONLY issues that any of my Emersons have. so what?

I would rather have that than bad blade grinds, blade play, sloppy lockup, or blades that are so off center they rub the liners. these are all issues I've experienced on knives by ZT, Spyderco, Benchmade, Strider, Kershaw, and Houge. Especialy bad blade grinds with ZT, Spyderco, and Benchmade. I have never had anything but beautifully done grinds, solid lockup, and no blade play on any of my 10 Emersons.

All of these knife companies are in the same league as Emerson, and all have issues on knives in the same price point. to imply that Emerson is the only company that is not perfect is blatantly wrong, and patently unfair.

as for the original intent of the thread, Awesome new knife! love the handle on that one. congrats. I hope you get many years of enjoyment from it.

I guess I should clarify a little. I am not suggesting that anyone who disagrees with my initial statement is a troll. We are all entitled to our opinions!

The ones I was referring to are the people I've read posts on in the past - and I've been on here numerous times daily since I discovered it several years ago when I got into knives - who claimed their knives were gritty, handles all askew, rubbing the liners, things like that. And several of them, when pressed, admitted they actually never owned an Emerson, but knew "all about them."

Those are the people I was referring to. It seems like Emerson knives have had this stigma more than from other makers, and of the seven I've purchased, I've never had any of the issues I've described. At all.

So have I been extremely lucky? I don't think so. And yes, I realize things happen sometime with any knife company. I bought a Gold Class Benchmade 940 several years back, absolutely beautiful, but the blade was not centered. I was able to tune it out, and it's been perfectly centered since then.

All I was saying is I think Emersons get a worse rap than other companies seem to do, and of all the ones I've had, I haven't experienced the flagrant, glaring issues some have described. That's all.

And my Super Commander, my 15, and my new Super SOCFK have been right up there "fit" wise as any of my other knives. Including my CRKs.

Now "finish," as I guess I was not using correctly, obviously that's different in some people's eyes due to some of the posts in this very thread. To me, Emerson knives don't have to have the water-jet marks blasted off of them. I happen to like them. And I must not be alone, the company is growing in size...so something good must be happening or he'd be going out of business instead.

And I'm guessing his customs have the finish some require, but as I don't own one I can't say with certainty. But when they sell for, what, $1600, he must be doing something right.

So perfection? No one has a perfect record. But I know if my house was on fire, I'd reach over my other knives (including my CRKs) and grab my Emersons before I started running again.

No one claimed that all other knife companies have better F&F, or that Emerson is the only company that is not perfect. And the fact that you can also find knives at the same price point with worse F&F than Emerson is moot. I've seen custom knives costing twice as much that had worse F&F than Emersons.

I think most people would agree with your comments on the blade grinds, blade play, sloppy lockup, and off center blades. But apart from the blade grinds, which Emerson has in my view always done above and beyond other companies, Emerson has not been immune to those issues either.

When I said that people imply that Emerson is the only brand that's not perfect it was a slight exaggeration to make a point, and was not directed specifically at you, but a general statement, although it was implied in your statements. As an example, and as far as me pointing out faults with other knives in the same price range being a moot point; please see your own statements in the quotes below.

... I've owned working knives just as good as Emersons that had immaculate finish, and were priced comparably. Given that almost every other production company in Emerson's price range pays better attention to finish, I don't consider it nitpicky at all to bring attention to shortcomings...

... You rarely see machining marks left on knives unless they are in the $10-40 range. Ever open up a $200 Microtech OTF? Miniscule internal components which will never contact the hand or be seen with the eye are finished better than Emerson liners. And that is a company that has to deal with the cost of US manufacturing and employment just like Emerson does.
I am in no way apologizing for Emerson, or implying that they are not without faults, just saying that I have not seen or experienced any more issues with Emerson than with any other knife brand, and that they do some things better than others. Like blade grinds.

By the way, I know that Emerson is not immune to any of the issues that I mentioned, but out of ten Emersons owned, and I still own eight, not one of them has/had any problems with lockup or blade play. I think 10 for 10 is pretty good. I honestly cannot say that about any other knives I've owned from any other company, but that's just my experience.

This entire post mirrors my thoughts exactly. Well said.

New Emersons that I have seen have excellent fit and finish and are good sturdy knives. They are just expensive for my budget.

I received my new Super SOCFK (Special Operations Combat Fighting Knife) today and for all the crap trolls bring up occasionally, this speaks volumes.

Numerous times, they don't even own an Emerson knife, they are just Internet "experts." Whatever!

Take a look at these pictures. And as we all know, a picture speaks a thousand words.

This knife is amazing. Ernest Emerson is a knife designer and manufacturer that harkens back to a time when craftsmen cared about what they produce and were proud of their products.

THANK YOU Ernest, Ann, Ernesto, and everyone else at Emerson knives for producing American-made products that so many companies today have forgotten how to do, or simply choose not to. I salute you!

I so love that knife, I wish I had picked one up when they were still available.
