axe comparison question

I'm pretty happy with the size of the GB Small Forest Axe and Wetterling's 19" axe. They are about the maximum size I'd transport on my back and I don't see splitting anything bigger than 5-6" rounds for what I would do. Chopping bigger logs to drag to the fire would be the heaviest chore; however, I'm coming to appreciate these mid-sized axes for how efficient they can be for several tasks.

Howdy J-

if you send me your address I'll ship you my 19" wetterlings and my gb wildlife hatchet. I think you owe it to yourself to try both. I wish there wasn't, but in the hatchet sized stuff there is a difference btn gb and wet, the wildlife is the best chopper in that size class bar none. I do really like the 19" wet though.

Anyway, drop me a note and I'll get you some steel...

I would much rather carry the 14" GB Wildlife than anything 19".

All I can figure is a lot of people on this forum don't really travel much distance on foot because weight never seems to be an issue when axes are mentioned.

I have a 19" GB and no way in Hell I'd carry it ten miles on my back when a 12 or 14" hatchet weighting half will do anthing I need.:D

Well, you don't have to process as much wood as folks in northern states do.

Some folks live in areas where most of the small wood and deadfall was used up by guys with little hatchets ;)

Some, when they come across a dead LOG, will split it up and process it, rather than fell a sapling.

I just don't see where something so versatile, that weighs in at just about 2 pounds, can be thought to be overly burdensome.

Im excited to play with the GB wildlife spookys sendin me. I ordered a 19in wetterlings, so a nice side by side work review will be done.

Come now, lets be a bit reasonable...You can say the same thing with packs, tents, boots, guns, knives, titanium sporks blah, blah, blah....

from georgia, but live in rhode island (just for a few years) my GB wildlife hatchet has been fantastic. large enough to actually split 5-8" wood but small enough and light enough that I truly don't mind carrying it (even though I have become more weight conscious)

hope that helps, but truly, the GB axes come with an amazing edge

Drop me a line when you want to sell that 19" GB!

I just recieved my 19in Wetterlings from bensbackwoods (my crook knife was backordered :grumpy:) and Spookys GB wildlife. Very impressed with both of these tools.

Pics and review to follow.

Heres some teaser pics of my upcoming review. I couldnt get to the woods today, but I snapped some shots in the backyard.

This Wetterlings is very nice. Good grain in the haft, well alligned head, and shaving sharp out of the box. The mask is nice, good quality leather, my only gripe is that it should have a D ring or other attatchment point on it. Very nice stuff.

Im not gonna do any comparisons, or comments on the very nice GB just yet cause I wanna save that for my review, but heres some pics. This is out of the box. Right now its getting some coats of linseed to the haft, but its nice to not have to do any edge work. Something I thought the norm for Wetterlings.

Handsome axe man! The wood on yours looks a lot better than mine. But then I've also had a small miss that caused a chip in the wood below the head. Hidden now by a linseed-soaked jute wrap.

Anywho, anxious to see the review.

Thanks brother....I think its a great axe.

Thanks again for sendin me that GB. I cant wait to get out and do some work with these!

You name the time brother, im down.

Im also hoping to score this old Collins double bit to restore soon. ;)

I bought the 19 inch first and after realizing that for 2/3 the price of one GB I could still have both the 19 and the 26 inch, I called and added the 26 inch to the order. You'll thank yourself for it if you do likewise. The 19 inch is big chopping power in a packable package. The 26 is MORE chopping power in a less packable but still manageable package. I'm glad I got both. Last thought, wrap the hafts for protection, it's worth it!
