axe comparison question

Hey guys! Im lookin to get myself a Wetterlings Large Hunting Axe but the wetterlings site doesnt have the.. "buy"... option lol. So ill ask but hopefully it isnt against the rules :foot: anyone know of a good reputable site that i can buy a brand spankin new and hopefully good quality Wetterlings Large Hunting Axe?

bensbackwoods.com is the place for Wetterlings and GBs. Bens a great guy, and has a big following in these circles.

Just dont browse too much or you will leave his site with more gear then you came in for! lol....

Ahha thanks guys just checked out his site and the first thing i clicked on was the "Flint and Steel". Thats never good when I go to a site looking for one thing and my eye gets caught by something totally different.... uh oh :)

Lord oh man.. Axes and pots and tents oh my! :D not bad not bad but back to the wetterlings .. *wipes drool off chin* lol anyone here ever used a Wetterlings Large Hunting Axe to hammer something into something? On the wetterlings site it says its polished for hammering or skinning but what Id like to know is just what it can actually hammer without facing any damage or possible damage?

I wouldn't strike steel with any axe head.

Hammering things like tent stakes, wooden or plastic wedges and such would be fine.

Yeah...I wouldnt hammer steel with it. Not because it is too soft, but to avoid loosining the head, or breaking the haft.

Ive drove in plenty of tent stakes with my fiskars, and with wood hafted axes....

Alright awesome news, Ya i pretty much figured that cuz ive seen how the eye walls can bend or break os thats not something i want happening :jerkit: Well thanks very much for the site, Now... i just need to save up. big time. ha

Hey Jake, any comparisons yet? I finally picked up a 19" Wetterlings earlier this summer. As much as I like my GB SFA, the Wetterlings is a great deal! I didn't think I'd like this size of axe...too big for the belt and not big enough for larger chores. Well, this isn't a belt axe and it's a big performer on small and pretty significant chopping. These guys aren't the best splitters except on smaller rounds (6-8"), but they excel at everything else from limbing to dropping smaller trees to choking up on carving out a spoon.

The finish on the Wetterlings wasn't at the same level of the GB, but it really wasn't bad. I did very little with some sand paper to match up the edges, but it was wasn't really necessary. The wood grain was as good as GB's. My only complaint is the small nick that is taken off the bottom edge of the blade face. I'm assuming it's a safety thing and to be honest I'm not sure if it's that big of a deal, but I don't like the aesthetics of it. I'm really looking forward to using these guys more during the winter when I can get past the briars and start chopping away at some fallen trees and branches in the back of the property.

Just my little carving kit...of course the curved Mora came from Ben's Backwoods.

I did stain my GB SFA's handle, but haven't done anything to the Wetterlings.

Nope, the GB came that way. I don't recall whether I gave it some BLO though. I probably did, I think even my dog has received a coat of BLO at some point...

Nice carving kit. Im putting something like that together right now too.

Got my crook knife hopefully coming soon, and a Mora carving knife so far. Im gonna sew up a tool roll out of some old BDUs. I also have a Keen Kutter Draw knife, but its a bit too big to fit in a roll. Fun blade though. Hope to add a few more carvers in, and a smaller chisel.

Hilarious!
:D Yeah, I use that stuff all the time too.

Wow - The Small GB Hatchet is almost $150? and the SFA is $110? Why?

I have the SF axe - One or two hands - it rocks. Never tried a Weterlings but they look good too

Hey everyone, im planning on getting a wetterlings for myself for christmas and ive also got a mora and might get another but i was wondering what you all would suggest for a newbie sharpener like me to get to maintain the edge of these two edges?

I have files, and a stone, but what I use most of all is a strop I made for convex knives.

My Wett came really sharp, and I really havent done much to the edge.
