Axe head styles?

Ok thanks. Trying not to be obsessed with this new potential hobby. Took the day off even though i had several hours of free time i could have used tinkering. I certainly like the looks of the axe heads i’ve seen here. Only problem i see not using the wire wheel is the top and bottom surfaces including the blade are in really ruff shape. I might have to use the wheel and a file to clean that up.

I will try to get some pics of a Maine wedge and what I call a PA head. Stohler- small eye, long tall but thin poll that balances the head very well.

I started this thinking buying some cheap heads and tuning them up would keep me busy in the Winter. At one point I had over 150 axes and heads. I am down now to just those I REALLY crush on.

Sounds great! I look forward to it.
The part about small hobby turning into an obsession.... been there done that. Except mine was with WWII M1 Garrand Rifles. As you I had about 30 at any given time and now just have 5 of my most precious ones.
So glad axe heads are cheap?? Lol

A couple nice looking heads you have there. Not to change the subject but the Shepard in your picture is a Great looking dog !

still trying to understand why this is a Dayton? All but the hoosier have a straight flat top. This one is flared top and bottom.
Not saying its special as its probably just a cheap foreign made 2.65lbs head but who knows. And the eye is 1 7/8 by 5/8. oh and there was a pin going through the bottom of the ax as to run through the tongue to add to securing the head? Not the hole?

Average user axes never had factory installed pins. You can find that kind of holes in Racing and sometimes in FSS (user installed pins) axe heads. I have seen Chinese hatchet with fiberglass handle that was pinned that way but never wooden handles till..............................................this

That chart only represents few old American patterns. There were hundreds.

This axe has flared top and it was advertised as Dayton pattern. Your axe is closer to this axe than to much older Josh's Hoosier.

So funny thats a $15 ax? But i knew the one i had was not collectable just need something to practice on. Saw a nice ax at our local mom and pop old time hardware store for $29 and a little nicer heavier one for $35 so $7 for the head and some fun seemed cool.

Maine wedge heads. Even though they look like a flat wedge, they do have some convex to the cheeks. E&S and KATCO have a little more than the Snow and Nealleys I have had. I think S&N made heads for L.L.Bean as they look very similar.

L to R TBA marked E&S 2 3/4lb; 2 KATCO at 3 1/2lb; E&S marked MCRR(Maine Central Railroad) at 3 1/4lb. This one had the factory edge and a few dings on the poll.

Same axes added 2 S&N on left and King Axe from Holbrook Mass. on the right.

I know there is already a Pennsylvania sleeper axe but I nickname the below PA axes as they are made by old PA forges. Kind of like the Lancaster rifles, they all bear some similarities. I have kept only a few, a Stohler, Stricker and one marked just 1905. I really like this pattern, have not tampered with these as I do not plan to swing them, just admire. I have had examples from Strauss and Trueblue that are very much the same.

Did you make a fortune on the garands?Been looking local for a little while and a spare parts rifle was over 1k.

Actually i did very well. All my service grade M1’s were purchased at field grade price. $695 at the time $795 for the Winchesters. They were beautiful with all correct parts. Only a few had maybe one part not original. All wood was original matching and like new.

this is the one i gave my son for Christmas a few years ago.

I knew everyone could help you more if we knew the patterns you were curious about!
There's kind of a strange thing going on right now on Ebay. People are calling axes that are clearly NOT a Hoosier pattern, a Hoosier to draw attention to it and presumably to get people who don't know yet to buy it. It's so underhanded and unscrupulous!
For a few it might be a genuine mistake, but a real Hoosier is pretty remarkable and distinct looking. I've got two;

Neither have any marks whatsoever. But I believe this one (on the left in the 1st pic and the right in the second) is a Snow and Neally;

And this one is from a larger maker. Possibly Kelly or Warren for instance;

I don't have a Plumb rockaway, but I do have tons of Jerseys and 4 other rockaways. After work I'll post some more pics to help you see the differences between them. :thumbsup::D
Unless someone beats me
