More beautiful work, coop. I'm about to finish up a loooooong, tedious, non-axe related project and am jonesin' to get back on the vise. Though neither my work nor my photos are as good as yours. Cheers to you!

Wow! Three great axes. You been busy.

I never find Connecticuts out west here.

Thanks Pegs and Vintage. The only one picked up locally was the Flint Edge. I have a lot of axe heads I bought last year. Still have a nice Red Warrior to hang. The draw knife and spoke shave have sped things up too.

Here is my new saddle axe. A Collins Legitimus Swamper:

Since it is reversible, it didn't take much of a wedge.

It had a cracked handle and this heavy duty scabbard made out of bullhide or some other kind of heavy leather.

I don't have a horse so it's going here. I just have to figure out a strapping system.

That's nice, but its an awfully big 'saddle axe' :p

From Yesteryears Tools...

saddle axe: a small version of a double bit axe suitable for carrying attached to a saddle.

You could call it a 'tractor axe' :D

Yes. Nice work. That is a huge sheath. My understanding (of course it's only nomenclature so grain of salt here) is that a saddle axe is smaller than a cruiser axe (2 1/4lb on a 28"ish handle). I have neither a horse nor a saddle. Nice Kubota.

Yeah Coop and Bear I'm familiar with the small "saddle axes"that were made by Norlund and Collins. This axe though came with the heavy duty sheath with the strap made for attaching to a horse or mule so somebody used it as a saddle axe. It appeared to have been carried by horse or mule a lot but not used much. Thanks for the tip Deoge, I'm going to order those. I love my Kubota.

I finished this one for a friend over the weekend. It was his grandfathers. Made in Sweden but no maker's mark. It had a slightly deformed eye and poll from being used and as wedge. My buddy cleaned up the poll and I corrected the eye. Strange eye - 3-1/2 pound axe with an eye closer to boy's axe size than full size. I hung it on a full size haft but had to remove a lot of material to get a good fit. Haft is a 30" octagon from House which I did some serious spokeshave work on both for size and to get a more balanced look. Finish is 2 coats of BLO followed by 5 coats of tung.
