Axe, Tomahawk & Hatchet Photo Thread

Snowshoed into my cabin yesterday afternoon to check on it, make sure it getting through the winter alright. They don't plow the road back that far so it's about a 2hr hike in on snowshoes so I decided to stay over night and hike out this morning. Here's a couple obligatory axe pics.




 
Thanks, its absolutely desolate and beautiful there during the winter. It's on a little lake near Old Forge in NY. I packed in super light (just extra wool socks, a Subway footlong and a few 22oz bottles of my home-brew double IPA in my bag) since I've already got plenty of blankets and necessary stuff at the cabin. I'm glad I didn't have to haul in anything extra too, hoofing through snow that deep isn't ez haha. There's electric and running h2o but I turn it all off during the winter months and didn't bother turning anything on for an overnight. Built a little fire in the wood stove to keep warm and dry my clothes, even melted snow for water and made coffee this morning... I had too much fun, I really needed to get away from life for a day.

Hewing today, 5 logs are done. I wanna build a wind shelter or something small by a lake. Never done this before, but it's working out OK.

Just hung my first axe today (a lot of inspiration came from this thread). No name 3.5 lb head, stained the handle just to see how it looked, its really uneven but this is going to be a user not a wall hanger, and I kinda like how it turned out. (Dogs were very interested in it lol)

Nice axe Garret. It looks like a "Ideal Ridge". They where manufactured by American Axe and Tool Co.

These are a couple of no-name, vintage axes I restored from heads with broken handles. I blued the double bit and stained the hickory handle with some walnut stain, and left the single bit in the white with an oil coat on the handle. Contrast the light and dark. I rehung these on hardware store handles, but I think I will get better handles for my next project. I have a 1944 dated American Fork and Hoe Company US Army hatchet head coming to me for a new life. I can't wait for that little jewel.
