Hinderer XM-18 VS Strider SNG/SMF

Now just throw the manix into a board a few times from a distance (let's say about 5'-6') and the total test will be complete. I'm not picking on you, by the way. I hadn't really thought about whether or not my folders could be run over with the car and come out alright. I'm sure the Strider would take it, though, now that I think on it. I wouldn't throw an SMF/SNG or that manix into a board though. My GB, sure! However, I'm just like that.

The quality of Rick Hinderer’s knives is second to none. They are as nice as a Sebenza.

I carry my Strider as much as possible when I'm off of work, but at work, I don't want to scare anyone with such a big knife so i carry a small Spyderco.

I also love my Strider so much that I don't want to use it for nothing but saving my skin, if it ever comes down to that and I'm not around my firearms.

I would throw the Manix though. It's my beater. I really don't care what happens to it. I'll just get another one or the Chinook. But I know it's a hearty knife as well.

Got the Busse AK47 on order and I'm really going to test that.

Thanks a bunch guys for all the kind comments!..I worked very hard on the design of the XM-18 too be a very stout, strong and carryable folder.and also one that cuts well. From the feedback of the customers who have one, I have accomplished that goal.
Cliff, please dont consider this as criticisim as I really do appriciate it when knife buyers look into tests and such. My test of the knife being run over by my jeep was to show the strength of the XM-18, NOT as a comparison to another knife. I know that other well built folders will take this including the Manix. What I did want to show by this was that the XM-18 being a OPEN BACK design with standoffs will take it.As I have designed oversize standoffs that will take a large amount of pressure and keep the handles from collapsing. The Manix I believe is a closed back? I guess I do need to explain this on my website describing the test.
Oh and as SpyderJon, has suggested for the throwing test. To help you out I first started at about 5 feet(that seemed to be my distance for a 1 revolution throw. That got boring as I was sticking it so I moved back for a 2 revolution throw. That is what really tested it as I really had to throw it harder and damn if I couldnt stick it everytime.haha So be prepared for your Manix to hit butt of handle on target, then handle against against target and bounce back the equal throwing distance,(be prepared to duck!!!) haha Then when after a few dozen throws of missing haha..when it does stick blade first thaen you will finally test the lock under this kind of impact test...
Now you may ask what does this prove?..#1 from the repeated impacts against hard wood with the handle it will test how much stress it will actually take before it starts to loosen and come apart.ANY kind of loose tollerances will definitly show up here!..and #2 after you do get to stick it.with a hard solid throw think of how much stress is being put on the lock mating surfaces,pivot,liners/handles ect, all through the handle and not to mention the tip of the BLADE! Like I said I really like to see knife buyers think and test for themselves before they believe what a maker is saying. Please let us know how the Manix comes through with the throwing. and do please be careful with it bouncing back! I really had to sidestep with the XM-18 as It just missed me and of course it landed on the only rock around! Oh well I wanted to test it! haha...Thanks again!

Rick

Holy Shite, the man himself! I'm not attacking your knife Rick, I just didn't think that was a good test when the website said, "can your knife do this".
Actually since I alrealdy have a few Striders, I have considered your knives for a long time and have been looking at the True North website and Arizona Custom Knife site for a model that I like.

Also, I truly respect you for coming on to the forum and speaking about your product. To me it says a lot about you. Is there a way I can see the knife in a knife store. My usual place I like to visit is Plaza Cutlery in the South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa California.

If this knife is there. I want to handle it and like I said above, think it's a great deal for the money. If I like it, I'll buy it.

Again, much, much respect to you sir. One last question, what is the washer material that you use on the XM?

Regards,

cliff

Hey Rick, less chit chat, more grinding.:D I can't wait to see my new XM-18 with the extra handles. If it's anything like my Firetacs then the wait won't be in vain. (The wait time is a whole month.:( :D ) Keep up the good work Rick.

OilMan, you ARE gonna LOVE your XM-18!! And the wait IS totally, totally worth it!!!

I have an SnG, so the I already have a Strider in my collection. That being said, I'd probably go with the XM18 at this point.

Really it is probably a toss up, and you just have to decide which design you like better. I can't imagine anybody being disappointed either way.

Checked out the XM-18 and it looks like a great knife. Only thing I wish for would be a opening hole or disk vs a thumbstud. Put an opening hole like a Strider SMF or a Disk like a Emerson CQC-7 and I would be sold.

I'd say pick which one you like the looks of the most as both are heavy duty knives, I own several striders and am thinking about getting an xm-18 to work into my EDC rotation, you cant really go wrong with either, just pick which one that talks to you more ;)

I just put in a late order for Dec. I asked for lime green G-10 Scale with the sandblasted finish.

Anyone know the washer material on the XM knife? Nylon, Reflon, brass, bronze?

Good question.

Another: I would love to see a picture of the green G-10. I recall Rick posting a picture of a solid block of G-10, but it wasn't very easy to tell what it would look like texturized and on the knife. If anyone could help I would appreciate it :)

(Feel free to post any other XM-18 pics as well, I'm sure everyone will enjoy them)

I ordered both shades of green with mine. And Blue. And Red. Should be done pretty soon.

I was contacted by Mr. Hinderer. A very nice gentleman indeed. He stated the washers are Teflon.

Had a question for all you Hinder XM dudes/dudets. Hows the flipping and detent on those knives. I had a zt that was similar a ways back and honestly was not impressed with the flipping. Blade was heavy detent felt a tad light and it wouldnt flip if I applied pressure to the lock bar. Other zt's I have have that same "dont add pressure to the lock bar" thing but the dentents rock.
I was thinking about getting a xm-18 or 24 just because but, didn't want it if the flipping action was not as nice as say a zt452cf?

None of my xms (I've had around a dozen now) are 'lightswitchable' like the zts. All work with varing degrees of snappiness when 'pushbuttoning'.

That being said I actually prefer the hinderer flipping action as it feels more controlled.

For what it is worth the bowies have been consistently the best flippers in my experience.

Matt
