Very excitedly I opened a little box that came in todays mail, and I am Psyched! This being my first JK, I can't wait to get a handle on this little bugger and start using it...
So here's a shot of the blank sitting on it's handle material...a beautiful block of Ironwood.
tomorrow AM I'll fire up the band saw and get going :)

Ooh! That's gonna look nice...

looking forward to seeing that one, looks awesome already though, thanks for sharing

Thanks guys, I thought I would post a few progress shots, maybe turn this into a WIP thread if that's OK ?

first I ripped a few slices just over 1/4 inch thick...drilled the first hole, dropped a pin drilled the next, pin, drill...you get the picture...

then back out to my home built shed and cut them to just outside the lines...I'm pretty good at that because back in grade school I would always color outside the lines:p

now I'll join em with temporary pins and sand the choil area to shape so that they will match up once assembled...
I think this is gonna be a real purdy cutter :)
this is the part where I really start to bond with my knives...

Please do show the WIP photos! So far, you do the handles the same way I do them.

Thanks John, this is fun for me.
Just out of the shed here are the handle slabs with their new front radius added. Nothing fancy here, just a sheet os 100 grit alox folded in half and rubber cemented together...

all of the other radiuses can be worked with the slabs joined to the blade, I like to do this one beforehand to avoid scratching up the blade from sanding. So this is smoothed to 180 grit now and ready to join the blade...

very nice, always enjoy the wip, I learn stuff whcih helps me not mess up quite as badly as I might, was re-working my lrk the other day tryignt to"fix" some things, thanks for the pictures!

Today was a good day in my little shop. So now I have finished glueing up the slabs, and this is how it went...

using the index pins and scale, I made a pencil line on the blade, which was already de-oiled with some 91% isopro alcohol, also the slab is de-oiled with the isopro, scrubbed till no more color leaches out...then the activator gets applied to both surfaces. This stuff works fast so I do a practice assembly first, and have my cleanup stuff laid out, and my punch ready to knock the pins out once this adhesive sets...

scale one in place its on to scale #2...

Tomorrow I will put some fresh paper on my sanding sticks and blocks and have a sit out in the yard and start shaping this beautifull wood into some semblance of a knife. I'm guessing that about 1/3 to 1/2 of this wood will become dust in the process...

Thanx for looking guys...

Duane

I really like how you shaped the front contour. It fits the curves of the knife very well.

Looking forward to the finished product.

Looking really good! Anyone who has hung out here for a while knows ironwood is my favorite wood.

That's looking really good!

Excellent! Glad you are having fun as well :) really looks good.

Looking great Duane!

Thanks for the pictures - this is going to be beautiful!

best

Why didn't you let John put scales on your knife? I take it you're going for a truly custom fit.

Looks great so far. So you knocked out the pins? I'm intrigued to see what you have planned for those holes.
