Spent the last 3 days out in the woods.. Had a blast... Spent most of the first day getting there Hiking in, and setting up camp.. I opted for a natural shelter....I had a sleeping bag so warmth wasn;t a primary issue. so I made a debris hut, but only with about a foot of insulation ( half the rec. depth) It served me well the first night.

I used my poncho as a door and was snug as a bug the first night...
THe next morning I was the first one up..So I got the fire up and running, carved up some pot hooks and got some tea and oat meal brewing.

after I ate my buds where still sleeping So I went to the lake to collect some water and do a little foraging..forraged enough for a full meal which consisted of sassafrass tea, cattail shoots ( although most where too woody) Hickory nuts Jewel weed seeds, I also found some "chicken of the woods" which would've mad a great meal but it too had gone woody... Hickory nuts where roasted and where great.

We where expecting rain the second night so I spent a good part of the day improving my shelter by adding bark shingles

Looks like a lot of fun!

Did it rain? How did the shelter hold up on the second night?

spent the rest of the day Hiking around the lake
My Bud caught this turtle

I believe it is what is locally reffered to as a mud turtle

It rained really hard (torrential the second night) I had a few drips on my face bt other than that I remained bone dry through out the night...however the shelter did get a bit lower as a result of the wet bark and leaves

Sorry for the dark pic but this is my shelter after the rain..next to my full pack.

Riley,

If you are going to include pics of yourself, can you please warn us. It was morning here - you scared me! ;)

Awesome pics bro - what a great time with the buds! Love the shelter, cool to see how well it served you!

Incredible John......Looks like an amazing time.

Whats the weather been like in your area? Was it hard finding dry mateials for initial construction of the hut? Im assuming it worked good for ya, but anything you wouldve improved or wished you had done?

Great pics man. I wish I was there with ya bro....

Kick a$$ pics John! It looks like you had a great time and keeping it simple must give you a great feeling.

Do you have a bivy around your bag?

Nice job on the debris hut. It's cool that you got the right conditions for a proper test too.

awesome pics John... looks like a great time for sure....:) that debris hut is cool... it looks nice and cozy....

J- the Weather has been 60's to 70's during the day. 40's at night... Dry material was not hard but it's just time consuming gathering it... It took me about 2 hours to get that much insulation on... and that's only about half of what I'm supposed to have...Gathering the bark shingles.. Which I had to pry off of deadfall trees with a machete.. took about another 2 hours...so it is far from being an expedient shelter.. However it was warm and relatively dry... If I had to change anything.. I wold make the shelter longer to allow a foyer area to sit... and work in so that if it started to rain it wouldnt be the en of my night.

Marcelo That is a bivy I brought in the second night as "insurance" wet +42 degrees is not a good combo... However the bivy was bone dry in the morning... I also feel it might serve as an additional tick barrier.

What is that tripod with the three layers of nylon that shows up in the camp picture? Looks like storage or shelves for something.

Looks like a good time although I think I would opt for my tent. :D

Looks like a great trip John! Sorry I couldn't make it bro:(

Nice job with the debri shelter.

We need to get together soon for some fall trecking and skills practice!
