Back from our "Bare Bones" Trip(Pic Heavy)

I can answer that.
Q1: IMO, It's foolish to head into the timber without the proper tools for firewood gathering. I normally carry a large fixed blade, saw and an axe.

Q1: The Pocket Bushman worked better then a normal folder but is not a replacement for a fixed blade. The steel used for the blade is pretty good.

Q3: The available wood where we were at was seasoned and hard. A full sized axe would have been better but a saw was actually the most missed tool.

To sum it up, a folder is a secondary cutting tool and really isn't necessary. Your fixed blade, don't leave home without it.
Scott

Thanks for the answers

Nice Pics 'Ol Bud  Looks like a real good time ! I don't think I could have done it without my Large fixedblade :D

This trip sounds really cool!

I have a question for the rule makers on this one:

Why the maxipedition bottle holder? I realize many in this forum like them -- maybe that's the reason -- but I would think most people would day hike (or otherwise be outside) with a backpack. Next thing down would be a fanny pack (for the more hardcore). Next thing down would be nothing (for the unprepared people, emergencies, or people testing their skills).

It seems like a small size backpack would be a more realistic limitation than a collection of small bags.

I realize that this is a game and experiment so the rules are largely arbitrary. It just seems that because most 'normal' people would carry a small backpack it would be a more realistic test platform.

I find the bottle holders interesting (and of course the nesting cup/bottle is awesome for space and utility) but I'd never go out in the woods with a bottle holder. They aren't that comfortable and don't allow me any flexibility in carrying different items. A backpack is easier to carry and holds the things I would typically carry.

I'm not trying to say "the stuff I carry doesn't fit in a bottle holder" so you guys shouldn't either. I'm saying that backpacks are very 'normal' in and out of the woods and would make a better (or more realistic) testing platform.

I also think if you had a backpack you would bring different things than a MAX bottle holder and 2 extra pouches. So the test would be different with a backpack.

Just food for thought.

The premise for this came about when Hayseed and I were talking about how when we were kids and the gear we carried hunting.
Knife, compass, cord, thermos, little food in our game pockets. The holder was chosen because most of us had them.
Nothing wrong with rucks, we all run them. But to truly limit ourselves the size of the pack set the limitations.
I know a fella who every year has his wife drop him off on a Sunday and picks him up the following Saturday. His gear is a canteen cup, 550 cord and a blade. He lives and shelters off the land for a week to retest.
Every time our core group heads afield we always complain that too much was brought, not this trip. There will be more and the duration will lengthen. The rules may change, wood procurement was difficult to say the least.

Thanks! The two sites must be twins, because they look almost identical from the pictures you took.

Did anyone on this trip find a set up that let them get a decent night's sleep?
If you did, would you be willing to share your secret?

Did the contractors bag filled with leaves work very well ? The reason I ask is because I posed that question on this forum once before and it was an unpopular idea. Unanimously a bad idea.

I would run two. I didn't mind it but should've had extra for my legs. Pine boughs for the base, bag of leaves and a heat sheet, it ain't a Serta but it'll do. If a reflector fire is built, you're golden.

My brother did fairly well. He used two contractor bags, tied together so they would not move around, but did not stuff them enough. He awoke for awhile around 3 or 4 am before settling back in. The bags, plus a poncho set overhead, beanie, and a Heat Sheet to cocoon and he said he was good to go.

Thanks BushCraftBrainTrust! Your search-fu is impressive!

nice pics, looks like it was a fun trip, some of those rocky outcroppings look familiar, were you guys in cumberland county PA?

nevermind :( , guess i should of read the whole thread, i live a few minutes from there, love hiking that whole area, lots of great trails.

That trip looks like a lot of fun, and a big turnout to boot

We need something like that in Texas, I know there's a ton of members around here somewhere :D

We have tried. I think some actually made it, but I always get screwed with work. Now that I have weekends off I want to arrange something before I graduate.

Ahh, perhaps spring break would come into question :p

I'm in the Police Academy here and our graduation is this May, we still get spring break off..... work doesn't need to know I'm off that week ;)
