Back from the W.L.C. Basic Survival course

Tony,

Great pictures my friend! Glad you enjoyed the course. Sorry I had to miss out on the last night's apple pie but I had a wedding to go to 7 hours away. Looking forward to WAR and hope you bring some Cuban cigars for us fresh off the boat. Kidding buddy! Thanks for the kind words and talk to you soon!

What is a fire bowl and how is it used? I have never heard of this before.

Awesome pics and great review, by the way. Looks like you all had a fun time.

Take a section of wood, scoop out a divet in the center, and place a red hot coal from the fire(you can use a charcoal or briquette as well.) Blow down at the coal. You are blowing so you can push the heat directly the wood. The coal will slowly burn into the wood. Once you achieve the level of depth you like, scrape out the excess charred wood and seal. we used the pine pitch glue sticks we made. The bowl will hold water when done correctly. Use however you like, drink from eat from, or just as decoration in your home. It is great way to kill time by the fire.

Love the pics and great 2 tone handle on the FB:thumbup:

I really like Marty's shelter.

My friend Lynne used to live in a converted school bus way back in the woods. You had to walk about a quarter mile to get to her place unless it was bone dry.

She loved cooking and finally built a kitchen off of the bus that Marty's kitchen puts me to mind of a lot.

In winter she would just staple plastic all over the poles and heat it with a little wood stove. It was real cool.

lots of awesome pics, looks like it was a great time.

sounds like a great school and lots of good times...i know firsthand that if you are having fun it is 1000 times easier to learn something than if you are miserable...looks like marty and the crew understand that too.:thumbup:

Tony,

Thanks for the photos and report. It was so good that I felt like I attended with you!

I always love seeing the photos of courses people get to take! I'm quite green with envy. :D

That Fiddleback Bushcrafter looks right at home in that setting. Gotta get me one of those someday.

Humor the new guy, sorry for my lack of knowledge, where was this training offered and by who?

Thanks,
Thundermoon

This DP knives model was used for a variety of tasks during the course. Students had the ability to try it out for whatever skills lesson they had. All in all, the blade handled camp chores well and carved nice fuzz sticks after heavy use.

Love the avatar Kev:D:thumbup:

Here's a shot of a quick shelter Kev made with a poncho:thumbup:

Tony,

Thanks for posting those pics. You'll see a new thread in just a minute thanks to your camera working when mine wasn't.

Much appreciated!

Tony,
Thanks for the write up on my school. After 24 years of running the school I can proudly say that we have got it right. My two instructors, Kevin and Bob make for an outstanding program with each adding a new level of experience to the course. Kevin has many talents in the survival field and Bob adds his many years of trapping experience. Together they make a good team as long as I can keep them in line.

Looks like Kevin and the others had fun with that Wilderness Knife. Kevin will have to let me know all they used if to do. Doug

Tony,

Thanks for the pictures and the write up! You can tell everybody is having a great time as well as learning a lot.

I'm probably not the only West Coaster that is totally jealous of you guys back east having access to Marty's school!

Hey bro, Half the guys there drove about 10 hours or took a plane to the nearest Airport, and Marty picked them up and dropped them off when it was time to go. They came from Florida, Canada, and some place in the midwest; I can't remember. I do know that it is well worth the trip, you will gain a ton of knowledge and have an experience you won't forget. Besides you make some great friends in Marty, Aggie, Bobby, and even Kevin if you can believe it. I found a new hiking partner in 1 of the guys that attended and plan on doing some fishing with another when I get down to Florida.
