Back Pocket Carry Question

To start with I've never carried in my back pocket. Mostly because I do not want to destroy a knife with my butt. I know these things are made to last but I can't see sitting on them regularly as adding to their longevity. Is this an unwarranted fear or have any of you smooshed a knife while carrying it in your back pocket? Asking this because I'm playing with the idea of carrying my incoming Northwoods Barlow back pocket(due to the larger size) but I have reservations. Thanks for any input.

I carry a case stockman next to my wallet, vertically. no scratches, but it has fallen out a few times.I've lost other knives in the other pocket.. so now I don't carry a tradtional loose in a back pocket. While it took me a long time to figure this out, I never damaged a knife. Nothing fancy, but bone handle knives as well as synthetics have been damage free, both in the scales and the straight structure.

I've been wanting to try back pocket carry. I will be interested in other replies.

I have tried carrying a folder clipped to my back pocket. The knife tends to slip off and ends up on the seat cushion, to be found later. Not a good carry method for me.

Not a carry method I like personally.

Just about the only place I carry a single blade. Usually with a lanyard long enough to hang over the top of the pocket for easy access.

I tried carrying my Back Pocket in my back pocket, didn't find it too comfortable so now it rides in the tool pocket of my carpenter jeans.

Long ago I carried my Buck 301 right next to my wallet in the left backpocket of my jeans - never liked carrying that way and changed to my left front pocket. OH

No room for anymore in my back pockets I carry two wallets as it is one for all my ID cards and one for money related cards and bills. I personally cannot imagine putting a knife back there, either I'd trash the pockets or lose the knife the 1st time out and about.

I just recently started carrying my GEC #73 in my left back pocket. I can say that it does not bother me and i haven't had it fall out... at least not yet that is haha.

I always carry my knife in my left back pocket vertically next to my wallet. Never had a problem with that method.

I've adopted the method suggested by canoe camping guru Cliff Jacobsen.

I use a sewing machine to run a vertical seam about 1/2 way up my left rear pocket. Essentially, this creates 2 vertical pockets where there was once only 1.

I carry my cell phone in the outer of these pockets. The seam keeps it oriented vertically. Being on the outer half of the pocket (and vertical) I find that I don't notice it when sitting. On weekends, I occasionally swap the phone for a large multi-tool or large folder. I prefer this to belt holsters and even to the tool pocket on my jeans (eye glasses go there). On the tool pocket, I don't like having the weight of large knife bouncing around there as I walk.

In any event, I've not damaged my cell phone carrying it this way and can't imagine damaging a knife. If anything, I would worry about wearing out the fabric of the pocket if the knife has sharp corners on it (as my MT does).

WOAH - that was a eureka moment for me! I've been thinking of something similar for a front pocket for a while - somehow "subdividing" it, but just running a vertical seam - bingo!

I tried back pocket carry, I used a slip to hold the knife and keep it vertical - hate stuff at the bottom of my pockets.
I worked well, comfortable as long as the knife is not a fat one, don't think extended carry would cause any damage.

I like backpocket carry and haven't noticed any damage, even when carrying stag. I also find knives like folding hunters, 4 1/8 and up trappers stay vertical better that shorter frames and tend to stay in pocket. IMHO

I'd be concerned about the knife falling out to the pavement when you pull your wallet out. At least until you get so accustomed to it being there that it's instinctive for you to just "know" it's there and avoid this happening. That's my concern especially if it's not something you do all the time. A drop to the pavement would be murder on nickle-silver bolsters i'm sure.

For me it's RF pocket or watch pocket.

I bent a Leek carrying it clipped in my back pocket. However, I carry a Copperlock in my back pocket and just let it fall to the bottom, horizontally. No harder to dig out than the front pocket, away from keys and change, doesn't hurt my butt, and doesn't damage the knife.

I wear 5.11 taclite pro shorts to my job, They have pockets designed for carrying stuff. They are worth the money and last forever. Never a bent clip or damaged knife. Check them out. Out of all the clothes I have worn to work over the years. THEY ARE BULLET PROOF. (disclaimer, Will not stop bullets)
