Back to the Forum Knife - Handles only

wormgrooving was IIRC debated about quite a bit, with, i think, the general consensus being: 1. whatever Charlie likes:D 2. not the kind to be found on s&m knives and 3.really whatever charlie thinks is best.:) ( i'm sorry i'm laughing as i write this). some folks put up phenomenal pictures of worm groove, so if proponents want to campaign for this it's a great place to look.
thanks, Neal

Alright, I can't decide. Someone else pick. :D

But those last two... WOW!

Since the conversation's shifted back to jigging + worm groove, I figured I'd muddy the waters a little further for Charlie with my favorite example from my collection (which is admittedly far from comprehensive as of today), my one and only Boker 494:

It exemplifies the randomness I really like in this style, both of the grooves and the jigging, and the grooves are nice and deep but not overwhelmingly so next to the pits from the jigging. It just looks right for the style.

Deep random like the lick creek or Wostenholm sticks out to me, although I've looked at a few older worm groove knives since the debate, and do like them if the groove is subtle.

We haven't had a red forum knife yet. Dark red with a dense random pattern?? In a punch knife, for Kris? Just think about it, I know all of you are yearning deep down inside for a gorgeous red Forum knife! This is the knife you are looking for.....
😋

Thanks for all Charlie!

The thing with GEC jigging is, it changes character each time it is done because it is hand controlled. I suspect the amount of coffee the operator drinks that day may influence the jigging spacing slightly. It is people that make these knives after all, not automatic machines or robots.

If we ask for a dense jig like this one, with a rich, deep color, I suspect it will wow us like these knives did when they appeared!
To me, jigging like this pulls me right back to the golden days of NYK, Remington, etc, etc!

I'm all for that!

You said it Charlie, I'm a big fan of Lyle's jigging on the middle Farmer Jack!! I like how random Lyle's herringbone pattern is. It looks more handmade to me--like it belongs on one of your Ancient Barlows or another knife of a long bygone era.

Some regular patterned jigging like Schrade's peach-seed jigging looks good to me, but many look very "un-handmade", if that makes sense.

This is the Lick - center - I was referring to....nice

this Catt

Unsatisfied with all previous pics of this knife, I took some new pics this morning of my Cattaraugus Swell End Jack Knife, model 22479, pre WWII:
I think I finally captured the exact color of this one.
There is a faint etch on the blade that says "The Reading Railroad" :

Whatever Charlie comes up with I'm betting it will be wonderful.

Here is another I just found this morning, really nice jigging in my opinion.

I love the jigging on this old schrade. Is this considered Peach seed? I also love the amber color but if we could do a bolder color I think that would fit for a forum knife. This will be my first and I am ecstatic. Truly, it goes beyond the blade shape, the pattern, or the covers. It's about the pride of owning a piece of this wonderful subforum[emoji106]

I haven't read the entire thread, but I can certainly get behind points 1 & 3 -- and I am ambivalent about #2.

Just received this 1988 NKCA Camillus in brown jigged bone

very nice;

Also, I saw a Queen knife with reversed wormwood jigging

...interesting.

Or, and this is one of my favorites...

The jigging on this knife was different from any other cranberry bone GEC I have in my collection...unfortunately, not this one, but very [k]nice!

My two (2) cents.

PS. The pre-WII Cattaraugus pattern appeals to me too!

I can't believe I've missed this thread for 2 days! There's some awesome examples here, but the following handle is probably my all around favorite on a GEC knife ever.

Edited to add that I much prefer the random gouges or pick bone style over the patterned style.

Burnt Orange:

For an EE pattern knife, I really think jigging like on the Lick Creek or Rope knife would really be sweet. The only thing that would be cooler is the old Schrade Peachseed jigging which I don't think GEC has done well enough yet.

Corn Cob/Gator Bone would be my first choice.

Dense and random would be my second.

I'm pretty sure anything Charlie okays will look great.

Random deep jigging ( rope knife or 47 Northfield pruner)

Evergreen or burnt orange soup

Copperhead bone color is nice midrange color. New Day's are gorgeous.

I used to be indecisive but now I'm not so sure.
Glad to see this coming back on to the boil.

Any sort of random pattern sets well by me. My only request is that the bone is green. We really don't see enough of it.

My concern about going with green would be that GEC's green jigged bone offerings have been sort of hit or miss for me. In fact, I have two, and I've named them "Hit" and "Miss."

:D

Honestly, that #77 is a great knife, but I do think the green is just a bit dull.

Also, please note that I'm not submitting either of those as recommendations for the type of jigging I'd like to see on the forum knife. Just a color comparison on GEC greens. For the jigging, I really am leaning towards this type:
