Hey guys, I kinda want a medium sized backpack. What would the Beckerhead community recommend?? I really just want the ESEE Junglas Laserna pack, but I cant find it for sale. Will Becker ever make gear like ESEE does?? Cost is definitely a factor, so what do you guys have in mind??? Thanks.

I'm in the minority here... but for my needs Kelty Redwing is the way to go, 3100 cubic inches unless you find an older one which I believe held more.. awesome, ergonomic, comfortable and built to last.. not on the tac-ti-kewl list but one of the best versatile backpacks out there, you'll find guys wearing some old ones from the late '70's early '80's on the PCT, AP and other large trails.. and still going strong.. :D

^ This pretty much sums it up for me. I have the 3100, and my wife uses the 2650. Not a whole lot more to add!

Id drop the overbuilt military-styled molle/cordura packs (unless you have need for them). They are often too heavy and lack a proper ventilation system. Purpose built hiking packs such as those from Osprey are much more comfortable, lighter and have nicer features. Besides they often have a proper hipbelt which actully works at transferring the load onto your hips, as opposed to the simple strap most military-styled packs feature.

Ive owned packs from Osprey and Maxpedition, and definitely prefer those from Osprey. Just my 2 cents.

Kelty, proven, and value. I use new older style frame pack and love it, but have been looking at the internal frame packs.

well, Becker designed a pack ages ago. it's called the Becker Patrol Pack as made by Eagle.

since Eagle changed hands, the BPP isn't really the same. I'm sure it's okay.

Mountain Smith made great packs, esp when Mr Smith was involved. he's gone off and wandered to form a new company: Kifaru - you want ultimate, there you go :)

Maxpedition makes many find packs. something they have will probably do.

Someone posted a kelty on here a few weeks ago that had molle attachments on it. I think it was a coyote color. I looked, but It find the couldn't that thread. Lots of us asked about that pack.
Anybody remember that thread?

If you can locate a REI store near you, hit them up to have a backpack "fitting". You just walk in and start fumbling with the packs and someone should roll up to assist. They can size up something that fits you well, you can try on a bunch of different brands to compare for yourself and when you find the one you like just write down the name and look for a better deal online (unless you have a REI membership, which gives you back $ at the end of the year for spending $)

I've gone through this process a few times in the past with trail boots and hardcore heavy pack boots and have found that some of the folks working there actually know what they are talking about. Found a good deal for the same stuff elsewhere, too. Best of both worlds, man.

One of the downsides to ordering stuff online is that you'll never really know how it will fit you. Try that crap out if you can because everyone is shaped differently. Good luck!

Kelty Raven 2500 Military Assault, or kelty strike pack. It might have been one of those

Thanks for the advice. I think I will have to make the trip to Portland. So far I'm thinking of the Falcon-II, Condor-II, and Vulture II, by Maxpedition.

I heard voices.....

MAXPEDITION FALCON II, it works excellent for me

I was just looking into the Becker Patrol Pack and was thinking about picking it up until I saw the un-Beckerish price tag. If anyone can tell me if it's worth that rather astronomical cost, I'd apreciate it. Until I hear it will make me breakfast and print $100 bills, I'm definitely looking elsewhere.

Haha its got a BK-77 extreme-ish price tag.

I'm also in the nontactical group. Ive had a camelbak vantage for more than two years and Ive beat the crap out of it with no problems. It also has the best ventilation system I've ever experienced. You can't go wrong with Camelbak or Osprey.
