Backspring snapped any help?

Almost always too high RC . Only other is too much preload on the spring. Scallops didn' help . I have made just under 2K slipjoints and broke two springs due to too much preload on one and wrong RC on the other.

Thanks for your input Mr Lloyd! I'm a big fan of your slip joints and Mr Hanson's!

I'm not sure how filing a sharpening notch into a part of the blade that doesn't even contact the spring, could have anything to do with it's failure.

Seems like bad geometry or a bad heat treat, as others have said. Did the knife have a stiff pull?

At any rate, it's a crying shame when a maker isn't man enough to stand behind his work, but would rather make lame excuses. Looks like a really nice piece otherwise.

Yes the knife did have a strong pull and snapped when I was closing it going from open to half-stop scared the crap out of me..

I don't think it's the scallops that caused the issue, as that maker has over a thousand knives out there that all have them, with no problems. I don't really see how your modification would have anything to do with it, although if you had done that on a production knife you'd void your warranty right away too. It would seem to be an issue with the temper of the spring, and the maker should take care of it, even if he charges you for the repair. That way at least you get your knife back in order.

I hope you get it resolved, the rest of it looks like a beauty!

I've broke my share of springs early on and almost every time it was the Rc being too high. Got a hardness
tester and those problems went away. I really don't trust other people doing my heat treat, and tempering ,and
especially on springs. I'm with Stan and Don on this-- possibly too much preload? Even then with the amount
of assembly's to complete the knife it should have shown up earlier. Scallops,- why? to throw the light around?
Fine for whoever wants to do it- just not me.
Ken.

The maker made things right thank you all for your expertise and knowledge it is very much appreciated! Thanks Godbless

I couldn't imagine a decent maker not taking care of the broken backspring - congrats!
