Backups, and how many?!

How many knives do you have backups of? And how many backups per knife?

What is your reasoning? ;)

Personally I have a backup of some out of production knives that I just love, like the Benchmade 755 mpr which also has 2 variants I have one of each. And, I have 2 ZT 0900s as I think it's just that good of a knife, and I wanted another before they all went off the market so I wouldn't have to hunt one down and pay higher prices.

I've also bought some collection knives primarily slipjoints and traditionals that I've also sought out same patterns with different covers or blade styles. But those typically aren't identical backups.

I don't have any back ups. Life is too short and there are too many knives.

Same here, I have a couple models in different flavors but not straight up the same exact knife more than once. (PM2 1x Carbon 1x Copper, 0392 1x Blue 1x Black, 0562 1x Carbon 1x Orange G10)
I wouldn't get the same knife twice, but if a knife is good and there is more than one variation I am open to grabbing it.

What if it's OOP and it's a favorite?

I've only got 2 models I doubled down on. Have 2 Kershaw Crowns, in different color scales. Got the second mostly on a whim and the fact that they were both just like me. Dirt cheap. lol
Did the same with SAK Army Classic SD. again 2 colors, but it was more that one was a promo knife that had enough meaning to me that I did not want to lose it so it stays at home.

I have backups of the RR Improved Muskrat, Maserin Plow and a couple of spare Okapi Biltongs.

I had a spare Griptilian for a while after losing the one my wife gave me. I ordered a replacement immediately, then found the missing knife in the snow on the tarmac next to my bus, before the replacement arrived. The extra eventually became a Christmas gift to my son-in-law.

For a while, I kept a spare Mini Barrage on my shelf, until a junkie relative stole it to buy heroin. He later fessed up, and told me that Pawn America had given him $80 for it. Yes, the kid is still alive, and no, he hasn’t replaced it as he had promised. I’m not holding my breath; a junkie’s word is worthless.

The only thing that comes close is the Victorinox classic of which I have 3, but they're all users.
I'll probably have a different classic for every day of the week eventually.

Then I'm out of luck? I mean, I get your point so I'd say if you bought a knife when it came out new, and 3 years down the line the company says they discontinue it and you fell in love with said model in those years you owned it you can certainly snag another one. It's more a personal thing, if somebody loves the ZeroBench 007CF Improper and they buy a retailer case with 12 knives in it, go for it.
To a good extent it comes down to Collecting vs Using. If you're more into knives for the practical daily cutting aspect you're more likely to have a smaller rotation and more inclined to keep multiples of a knife that serves you really well. If you go more into a collecting aspect you might be more inclined to go for more variety. At least that's how I see it, I use my knives but I enjoy the variety and collecting aspect as much (and a limited budget) so I rather get a different model to enjoy that, that get another replacement for a knife I already have and already can enjoy as is.
Personal preference.

I sold the few backups that I had. Figured I had enough blades to last me the rest of my life so what was the point in having doubles.

I must admit that I have Qty:3 Gayle Bradley 1 Models. This is a sign of my sickness, but it's probably the best value of any folder on the market and have seen them go for crazy cheap at times. Yea sometimes it makes me go :eek::eek: What is wrong with me? Used to have other spares, but sold them all. Will get around to selling the GB1's one day.

When Pig hunting, I haul 2 knifes. Both Bravo 1's LT versions. 3v for cutting off the hide infested with pig hair dreads and MUD, then use the elmax blade to cut out the back strap.

not quite a dupe, but kind of, lol

A blade in each hand in an emergency is nice too.

I have some backup Leatherman juice, SAK and some TL-29 but can't justify the expense on any more expensive knives.

I think I have @13 Swamp Rat RMDs and @20 Busse ASH1s.... yep, lets call them "backups", that is much better than "s#it i really like them things" ..... :D :D
