Backups, and how many?!

I just lost my EDC of 8 years, and as I went to replace it, I discovered that it is out of production.

Parts of me wish I had a spare, because then I wouldn't need to go out and find a replacement. The other half of me... is kind of glad I get to go out and find a replacement.

I don't think I would ever intentionally buy "backups". I do have knives that have overlapping/similar uses though. Thats so far been as I've refined my preferences. The older ones are most likely to be gifted, sold, etc.

The old "pair and a spare" dilemma. I have a pair of Browning Hi-Power 9mm pistols. The "spare" would have cost me the same as the two originals.

I have a lot of spare BUDK "wahoo killer" knife-like objects, as they were 3 for $5. I also have a lot of backups for Tramontina, Imacasa and Incolma machetes. But those are like yellow pencils or BIC pens. Might find one that works.

I don't have any back ups. Life is too short and there are too many knives.

I'm starting to feel that way myself. I currently have a couple of M4 PM2s with backups, 3 of the Benchmade 913, and I think I still have a couple of Spyderco Mule backups but I sold one or two and I don't remember offhand what I have left.

When I bought the first PM2 M4 I bought a spare in case I broke or lost the first one. Then the CF version came out so I bought one of those, so it could effectively be my backup. Then I bought a pair of the DLC versions so I have at least one more than I need.

If a knife becomes a valued carry piece I always buy a backup. I’ve done it since I was young. When I was a knife carrying kid, long before the internet came around, I lost a knife. When I went to replace it, it was no longer available. There was *no* getting another copy. This hit me harder than it probably should have. Been backing up ever since.
That sounds like a mental disorder. ;)

The Vic Elec. looks like one that will go away. I ordered 2 more today.
Peace of mind for $60 or so.... Vic is pretty slow to discontinue knives. The world is a big market.

I have backups of many of my favorites from traditionals to modern. It’s part of my personality. My mind always has to have a backup plan. I don’t really like it though, that part of my mind can drive me nuts. When it manifests itself as two knives of my favorites, it just isn’t practical. When I’m the guy everyone comes to when they need a tool or some machine that works, or they forgot something on a campout it’s more practical.
I have multiple traditionals (same pattern and same manufacturer) also, but I don't consider them backups as they are all different. It's a money pit. I'm somewhat effected with the same disease as I am looking at buying a very similar pipe (same manufacturer and same model, but different). I so seldom find one that I am comfortable with the price and the shape.

Never an exact copy . Often have several variations , eg serrated vs plain , or different steel etc . There's just too many exciting "new" ones I've never tried yet and no knife I can't live without .

Not backups per se but certainly more than one (... ahem).

1796 Light Cavalry sabres.
Not the Cold Steel kind (though Im sure they are okay. Never held one) but the 1796 + kind.

No such thing as 'too many blades!'

Sure ! One must be prepared to equip one's own cavalry troop . ;)

The only dedicated backups I have are for my Left hand Military and PM2, true left hand knives are just too rare for me to not have duplicates of them.

I also have two or three variants of many other Spyderco models. Most are sprints and/or discontinued, so I shouldn't have a problem selling them down the line if/when I want to.

There's a big world of folders out there, but I guess I have fairly narrow tastes and that's contributed to the repetiton.
