Backups, and how many?!

The only knife I have consciously purchased a backup for is the Victorinox Adventurer (side lock model). I carry this knife every day. I had one that was pretty banged up and left it at a job site. Got home and slipped a new one into my pocket. I still have three or four more of them just in case. It certainly provides some peace of mind.

This has been the case for a couple years. I have recently thought about this and I think I would be comfortable switching my regular carry Vic if I need to. But the liner lock version is out there now and I may just pick one up.

The alox Electrician and Small Tinker are the two Vics I have purchased this year. Good knives.

I'm not really sure how many classics I have but the Electrician is my most used knife .

This thread needs pics.

To each his own but I find it slightly silly to see a slew of identical and expensive knives of which one person bought seven or eight of the same knife just because he could.
The ones thatll never be used but only taken out for pics, that is.

At the same time, Ive bought two knives of my favorite Spyderco users. Again, they are users and the extra knife was bought, should one be lost or out of commission.

Ill never willingly not own a PPT, Yo or SB. Tjey are just the greatest cardboard killers and apple peelers.

The Cats are all used as well of course. I use a 225Q as a camp knife on a regular basis.
Even after all these years, they work just as intended.
Again, certainly not expensive safe queens only taken out for pics.

As others have mentioned, one might eventually come to ones senses and sell the Spyderco duplicates and hope the remaining example wont get lost or destroyed.

I'm the same way. This guy knows what's up

I used to buy backups. Then years went by that they just sat in their boxes. It started to seem like a waste of money. I now only have backups of two of my knives and both are for sale. All they are to me now is funds that are tied up that I could be spending on adding variety to my collection.

2 Becker BK5s
3 leatherman PST IIs
3 Cold Steel Master Hunter 3Vs
2 Cold Steel Master Hunter Carbon Vs
2 Spyderco PM2s
2 Cold Steel Broken Skull cts xhp
2 Victorinox Campers

Besides some Spyderco H1 models, a San Mai Trailmaster, ESEE 3 & 4, and a couple customs, that's about the extent of my collection. I can't justify most of the duplicates, but it is what it is.

If you really like a knife model it will be discontinued someday pretty much everything is except a few like the Endura/Delica . something you EDC has a very high possibility of being lost/stolen or maybe damaged. if you have found your "grail" and actually use/carry everyday of your life why not have a backup to cover Murphys Law?

Most knife models eventually get discontinued except for what have become essentially standards like the Spydie Native, Endura, or Delica or a few of the Vic SAK models. It really depends on just how important having a particular knife model in your pocket is to you... if very important or if you can't wait say a week for a replacement, then get a backup. Seldom am I knifeless even if I lost my primary carry knife, so cutting something is generally not a problem.

Airborne 1: I would personally get another Vic Electrician. You seem to really like it unless you can just drop by a store and buy another the same day. That's why I have multiple Vic Adventurer models and I bought three more when they were discontinued. I don't do this with just any knife. I have to really like it and depend on it's familiarity.

Reason I asked was, I'm considering selling one or two of my 3 backups. The zt 0900 I don't plan on selling. But I may look into loving one of my 755 mpr and one of my traditionals dupes.

It's strange. I tend to like oop knives for some reason? Some of my favorites (I don't have backups of) are the Spyderco slysz Bowie and Techno and the squarehead, Benchmade small summit lake and 755 mpr. And probably the soon to be Benchmade 300 lol

And that is how life is. And you grow and evolve. No point stagnating. Same with knives. Big world of knives out there.

If a knife becomes a valued carry piece I always buy a backup. I’ve done it since I was young. When I was a knife carrying kid, long before the internet came around, I lost a knife. When I went to replace it, it was no longer available. There was *no* getting another copy. This hit me harder than it probably should have. Been backing up ever since.

I think the only reason to do it today is to avoid the (possibly) super inflated price of buying a replacement years after the knife goes out of production.

Thr Vic Elec. looks like one that will go away. I ordered 2 more today.

I have backups of many of my favorites from traditionals to modern. It’s part of my personality. My mind always has to have a backup plan. I don’t really like it though, that part of my mind can drive me nuts. When it manifests itself as two knives of my favorites, it just isn’t practical. When I’m the guy everyone comes to when they need a tool or some machine that works, or they forgot something on a campout it’s more practical.
