Bad Business, Foolish Company

Having said that, I must say I am also a bit frustrated with another knife company that has been 'stringing' its customers along regarding a new line of knives(dirty rats);) I would already have one (or more) if they were more available

foxmd, checkout www.ratknives.com if you are looking for new line rat knives. They have M6s available along with a couple of sheath options. ;)

2 points should be adressed concerning these things. when busse stops taking orders for a knife, they do not stop producing the knife altogether, they simply stop taking orders for that model. the production of that model does not stop until all orders that have been placed are shipped.

"maximizing their profits" implies that busse should be trying to make their company as big as they possibly can, and taking in as much money as possible. the more bussiness you do and the more money you bring in - the more of your life you have to put into it, and the more hectic it becomes.

there is a point at wich you look at how you live your life in order to maintain a level of profit and you realize that that life is no longer worth living.

while increased profits are good - they are good to a point. money is not everything, and when it starts to encroach on your ability to maintain functionality in your bussiness and personal life, it becomes a detriment rather then a benefit.

as has been stated before, busse combat has been around long enough to show that it is a functional company on an economic level, and it is run by jerry busse, who will decide what he feels is best for his company, not what is seen to be the best from a purely econimic theory stand point.

right now busse combat offers one or two knife models at a time for ordering. you can order as many of that model as you like while it is offered, and it will be shipped to your door within 6 months. that alone makes them better then some makers who have had to stop taking orders completely in order to keep up. i cannot expect busse combat to make every model at the same time when there is apperently enough demand for individually offered models to keep them busy. i would rather busse combat work within a limited offering basis and work well then to have them try to grow exponentially at the cost of shipping times/production or the people behind the bussiness.

likewise i cant assume to know the inner workings of busse combat as a company, or on an economical level. i'm only commenting on what it appears to be.

ymmv, all of wich to be taken with a grain of salt.

Well said Josh. However, i still wish Jerry would clone himself about three times. One to drink and smoke cigars, another to do GFD's all day, and the last one to do all the other stuff. Jennifer can keep the original! Everyone is happy. I just wouldn't want to be around if the drinking and smoking clone corrupted the other two clones and the original. It would be a right mess. Actually, methinks it would be inevitable. Maybe we should just stick to one Jerry!

Cheers,
BJB :D

Also, I think it was hinted at by someone in an earlier post, but don't think for a minute that all of Jerry's customers are folks like us who sit and wait for a new knife to come up on the Busse Combat site or Company Store...I'm sure he makes a decent bottom line just from military contracts alone, which we hardly ever see or hear about, and which I'm also sure is part of the reason for delays in shipments and new model releases. Every once in awhile we see a knife come across and we say "what the hell is that?" because it was never released to the public. When he's not churning out knives to make us civvies happy, I'm sure he's not sitting on his ass drinking beer EVERY hour of the day - at least a few of those hours are spent taking care of our boys in the sandbox.

Not enough production? Sold out inventory? Not maximizing their profits? Lost market share?

Well, there's really only one thing to do...

I BLAME PORKERSON !!!! :grumpy: :grumpy:

As a newbie to Busse knives, I think Busse has a lot in common with Harley Davidson. Busse has created a loyal following and a product that is legendary. I am new here and I am very impressed with his loyal fans. A company that has such a loyal customer base is doing something really right and will stay in business for a long time.

A close friend of mine once said, "You don't have to make a million bucks a year, you just have to make more than you spend". In fact, he said, it's usually more comfortable to live within comfortable means than to try to up your "means" while losing all your available time to actually enjoy it. I think that applies here. Not every business needs to compete with the Gates' and Walton's of the world to be as successful as they need or want to be.
Last time I was in New Zealand the news was plastered with how pissed off the Prime Minister was at Aukland businesses for not growing to potential. These businesses had high 6 figure to low 7 figure revenues, were providing a family and a handful of employees with comfortable lifestyles, and these people didn't want to jeapardize their comfort by taking on so much work that they would become overwhealmed. Sound familiar? When you don't have a taste for micro-jets and Formula 1 race team ownership you can get by on as little as a million dollars a year (as long as you don't have kids...)
As to other allegations of low production and insinuation of disloyalty to the customer: hang out for a while and learn of what you speak. If "overruns" are offered at Extravaganzaaaaaas, then there must have been a "military run" from which they came. Not all sales are three knives being bought through the website. Loyalty to the customer is part of virtually every aspect of the Busse strategy. The warranty is bullet proof, follows the knife rather than first customer, and is not limited by any length of time. The limited run of each knife, while frustrating to many first time buyers, ensures that the secondary market will be strong, and that INFI will appreciate faster than gold, silver, or just about any banks high yield CD. A strong secondary market further ensures that the next model run will sell strongly. Finally, to address the concern of the soldier who isn't in a unit that is issued a Busse knife, and can't find anything available on the website, and can't afford anything on the secondary market: 419-923-6471. Jerry has done some impressive things for troops over the years, but I don't want to go into detail as the privelege has the potential to be abused. The bottom line is this: Jerry will do what ever he can for the troops outside of Military contracts and current web offerings. I know there are other troops out there who can back me up on this. Loyalty is not even remotely a matter of question with the Busse operations. And loyalty is not the same as preferential treatment. Anybody who's ever received preferential treatment from anyone at the Busse shop has earned it, one way or another. Excepting, of course, for standard customer service, which many people confuse for preferential service because of it's quality.

So stick around a while, and try to learn about something before making your judgement calls. There's more here than INFI. That stuff is just one of the reasons we show up. That and Cobalt's wickedly appropriate and timely pictures...

I cant wait to own more infi, but its usefulness to me overshadows its cost and secondary value. JW, you make some good points this one i feel to be far fetched.

There was an SFNO that originally sold for around $287, about a year after it was discontinued it sold on Ebay for around $800. ;)
