Bad information sometimes given on forums

I resent all this defamation. I know knives as good as anyone. I own over three hundred knives, thanks to the Home Shopping Network.

In fact, I actually helped make the first tactical knife. Can't tell you with whom as that is classified as it was a secret government project.

Suffice it to say, it has the BEST grind, the BEST steel, the BEST handle material, the BEST lock, and the BEST blade coating. I can't tell you what kind of grind, steel, etc. is used. But it is the BEST.

All I can say is get rid of that junk in your pockets by Reeves, Ralph, Spyderco, etc. and get a REAL knife like mine.

I'm new here. What Richard says is basically true. It's true of all boards. It is MUCH truer of most other bulletin boards. I spend lots of time on lots of boards for lots of hobbies -- and you have to lurk and learn who to trust and who has an opinion worth listening to.

So far, the information I've gotten off of these borads has been worth it's weight in gold. I'm not sucking up, either.

I've been guided to a number of purchases, production and custom. At times I've ignored good advice and been sorry. I'm thrilled to have been exposed to a number of knives and makers that would have taken me forever to find on my own.

The time I spend here is some of the most "productive" I spend online.

I suppose as a newbie, I don't have any frame of reference for Richard's specific examples, but I feel that I can address some of his more general statements. I believe that what has been said so far about this being a place for people who share a common hobby to get together and chat is a valid statement. In the last month I have gotten a lot of information from the kind folks who have responded to my posts or threads. However, I also recognize that like all forums much of this information has to be taken with a grain of salt. I think this is probably the most important point which has been made. I'm sure that there has been bad advice given, but there is also a lot of good advice out there. As long as we all realize this and recognize that there is a difference between opinions and hard facts then problems can be minimized.
Re: the physics behind the spine whack test I think the equation used would be that F = MA, or force is equal to the mass, multiplied by the rate of acceleration, and varies with the weight of the knife and the speed at which it is moved through the air. E.G a 10 oz knife being accelerated at a rate of say 10 miles per hour hits with 100 units of force. Sorry, that's about all the practical physics I can remember, so somebody please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Reading Ken Cook's reply made me realize something important. The view that 6M doesn't hold an edge well, or that one shouldn't accept any blade play at all, or that the Sebenza is probably better than any other folder you're considering, in my opinion is not "bad information". Iin fact, some of things Richard mentioned I consider downright good information! They represent views that are valid and reasonable, IMO. The problem isn't that they represent bad information; the problem is that sometimes those views drown out other views, or when the expression of those views turns a thread into a flamewar. But those views in and of themselves absolutely do not represent bad information, just one particular viewpoint.

Again, I think the way to counter this is to think globally, act locally. Participate in the threads in which you feel those views need to be balanced by an alternative view, be spirited in defense of your alternative viewpoint but try to ensure that your viewpoint is communicated effectively without inciting others to flame or otherwise be offended.

Change the name of this thread from "Bad information sometimes given ..." to "Views that drown out others, but shouldn't", and we're golden!

I am one of the "old men types" that Richard referred to concerning the Stockman and Trappers. I don't know all the technical data that Joe does. Seems to me that people should limit their advice to personal experience, or something that they have a lot of reliable information on, not just a personal like or dislike formed because of an isolated incident.:D :D :D

Is there a good folder for under $48 with an antenna and CB Radio in the scales.., no blade play.., and photographs well underwater?

On a serious note  ...good posts by all.., covered lots of ground I've thought of before, but I suppose Joe did "say it all"...

Mostly a fun bunch of people in my view! And heck.., we all know what the greatest knife ever made was don't we......?

Wouldn't you know it? BigBadBladeBoy earned his place on the top of page two!! I laughed out loud at that! We'll expect more from you. Keep it up, dude!

Also earning his credentials as 'Super Moderator' was Ken Cook's VERY on-target response. Thanks, Ken!!!! :D

When receiving any information consider the source. Should you give the same weight to a comment made about forged fixed blades by Ed Fowler as you would to one made by an anonymous person going by “BigBadBladeBoy”?

I'm an export.......as me anythingggggg!!!!!! :) :) :)
Post Script: Sebys ROCK!!!!!! :p

I couldn't agree with what Joe said more.

I see what you're saying though Richard. I just think it can't really be avoided. Think it gets pretty "deep" around here sometimes? Stop over on rec.knives sometime. Yikes. :D

What are we up to now? 10,000 plus members? It's just gonna happen.

BigBadBladeBoy: ROTFLMAO!

Firebat, not very popular, just a guy who likes knives a whole lot.

:D

So BBBB, where does one get the NinjaTron 2000 Death Monger®? At a mall near you! ;)

stjames -- I got my genuine NinjaTron from the designer. He and I were on Delta Force together. At least, he told me at the flea market he was on Delta Force and I was on the team at the same time.

Tom -- I am not anonymous. I am undercover. And if you think Sebenzas rock -- wait till you see my new Pakibenza. Forged by the finest team of 8 year old knifesmiths out of an alloy of aluminum foil, paper clips, and old soup cans. It is called "Can-Mai" and is a super laminate alloy and is guaranteed to hold an edge until the sun burns out.

DCKnives -- Dave who? Where'd you get that intel? Who have you been talking to? Is there a mole in our organization? Better call the "Chief"...

As far as some of my expert opinions, I think knives with handles suck. The handles could break, even on a fixed blade. Not something you want to happen in combat -- believe me, I have been on the Teams enough to know. Handles are TOTALLY Un-Tactical. Might as well have a Barbie Dream Knife...

Damn, I think I just posted a lot of words about absolutely nothing of consequence.

Bri, I think you summed up all my posts so far on BFC. :D

I think I'm one of those caustic guys JoeT mentioned and I really kind of enjoy bursting some quasi-experts bubble when they start stating opinions as facts. I'd hate to think anyone here took me too serious, I've said it many times here, "I don't know much, but I know what I like". The fact is there is a lot of knowledge to gain here, this is a tough group to stump when it comes to knives. Still you have to wade through a bunch of fluff to get at the nuggets. But, sometimes that's where the entertainment value comes in. You watch a guy claiming the virtue of his new knife with the latest wonder steel only to see it next month For Sale NIB, I mean you gotta love this stuff.

This is a community, we have our real experts and our village idiots. It's up to the reader to decide who is who.

Thanks much for the great posts. There is alot of good points made and much to think about.

In response to a couple of posts above, I know that BFC is not the only place on the web that has some of these issues, however its one of the very few places I actually visit. I just concentrated on it so we would all have a common frame of reference.

Brian, you can dig up some of my old posts if ya wanna, but be warned I have probably said some pretty stupid things....at least thats what my wife says :)

Seriously folks, you guys have given me lots to ponder and I do appreciate it greatly.

This has been a great thread.

I have learned alot from these forums. But, like talking to Socrates, the more I have learned, the more I realize I do not know. To newcomers, I can offer a little information and my opinions which like all opinions, should be taken cum grano salis.

The information, advice and expert opinion you receive on this forum (and any other forum on the web)is worth ever penny you pay for it.:D

This is why I have three full loose-leaf binders full of threads like this. I have lurked here for a long time before I started to post. I have however, printed out thousands of posts, hundreds of pics and put them all in sectioned Big Blue loose-leafs. I hope to have three more by the end of 2002. I cannot yet offer EXPERT opinion on knives yet, but I can quickly refer to one of my notebooks to convey one ALREADY given. This way, as my time on BF grows, I learn and gain that very important experience.:D
And to bigBadBladeBOY, WTF was the post on the top of this page meant to imply? You scream of DEFAMATION, without one legal clue as to the Actual definition (Go ahead tell us all how this thread has subjected you to public ridicule and scorn, damaged your professional standing, and possibly impacted your livihood?)YOUR REMARKS about Reeves, Ralph, Spyderco is PURE DEFAMATION and an indication of utter stupity. You got a REAL knife that places these fine knives into the category of JUNK, TELL US ALL about it:rolleyes:  wolf

ANY person who posts that they are a Delta Force Team member here on BF Must be talking about the Delta Burke fan club. Come-on, this is silly:rolleyes:
knife content: $100 more bucks and I can get Jack to give me MY
(almost) Brad Duncan Whiplash!!!!!!:( :(

Wolf,

Ya been "had" by the BigBadBladeBoy -- LOL!!!!!

Look at his profile -- 2 posts and he registered after this thread started. I believe 't was a bit of a joke....Hee hee...

Admit it -- you were ready to pull him over and shake yer rattle at him right? ;) (BTW, that was a great story in Community).

Best,

Brian.
