Bad: Mark Wohlwend II (Update)

To the OP, I'm glad if your money is on its way back to you, but of course regret that it required external pressure from others for Mark to do the right thing.

Please read my post again carefully. Posts 7, 8, 9, and 13 all strongly suggest or explicitly indicate that folks are buying knives from this maker when the knives have not yet been made. My post was not directed at the OP (notice I said "folks"), but to others who unwittingly support a practice that can easily result in disappointment. I also looked at some of the stickies at the top of the page before posting and none of them suggested what I did in my post. As such, I felt it appropriate to reiterate this buyer's "best practice" here in this thread since Mr. Wohlwend seems to require upfront payment or deposits for at least some of the knives he makes (or used to make).

To anyone who has lost any $ from Mr. Wohlwend, I hope you see full refunds. And even if refunds are forthcoming, it does no harm to go forward as if they were not. And if Mr. Wohlwend later makes good on returning the $, then you can always follow-up on initial reports.

Understood!

However, given the OP's experience, the only true safeguard against issues such as this is a maker's integrity. The OP did it "right," and has the same issue of non-delivery.

(I'm not arguing against Best Practice, at all, and agree with your post above-- but the OP's issue is more stark to me, highlighting that, with this maker, paying only for finished knives does not in itself guarantee that "such issues will cease to exist.")

I emailed Mark and he said he had sent some refunds out and would refund me too.

I had just finished an email right before checking my subscriptions. Is this the same email that he had listed with Bladeforums?

Murphunge I'm pretty sure it is. I think his intial reply to me was from the email generated through his profile.

Excellent, that's the email address I used. Thanks Mr. BE for acting as a medium on this. Also thanks to the mods and everyone else that helped with this matter. I really hope Mark is doing well and can return to making knives one day.
 
I'm glad you guys are getting hopefully getting your funds back. I still think what he did is pretty low and the fact that it took the mods banning him for him to start paying people back. I hope he stays out of the knife business myself he's a black eye for the craft.
 
Mark emailed me again a couple days ago saying he's sending out refunds via certified mail, and asked for my address.
 
just found this post I placed a order for 2 of his knives and got one of my 2 a few months ago ill send him a email to get a refund for the last one too
 
Got my refund. Thanks to all that assisted with getting this moving along. Happy to put this issue to bed.
 
I got a full refund from Mark yesterday, as he said he would do. thanks to Mr BE and the mods for making this happen. I wish Mark and his family the best.
 
Got my knife from Mark today im good to go its to bad this happened he makes one hell of a nice user knife.
