This post is on behalf of a friend of mine.

Recently, my friend sold a knife on another forum. She was paid in full and shipped the knife out with DC. Everything up until this point has been very smooth. Today, she checks the DC number on the USPS website and it says it has delivered. She PMs the buyer asking if he received the knife yet. Buyer states that he hasn't received a package yet. When she showed me the tracking number, I noticed that the buyers zip code and the one that USPS says the package was delivered to was different.

Now she is new to the whole online buying/selling/trading, so she thought DC would be enough, but did not get insurance. The buyer paid using Paypal, so I'm sure he feels a little more secure about being able to get his money back in the end.

I need recommendations as to what my friend should do. I told her to ask the buyer if anyone in his household or neighbors could have picked up the package for him and not told him. If that is not the case, then she should refund the money. I feel this is the right course of action. Any opinions?

I have had a similar thing happen, I did not get a package once so I sent the seller a message, he provided the DC#, it said shipped but it like yours, said it was shipped to a different zip code. I contacted USPS and they said that they could ask the carrier who supposedly delivered it if he or she remembered anything about delivering it. I laughed and said, yeah, fat chance. I cant remember everything, and actually Im kind of surprised I didnt raise hell for them delivering to the wrong place, I never did get it.

A week after my incident I got someone elses mail who had a very similar named street and the exact same numbers. I assume a similar thing happened to me, maybe even your buyer. EX, If they live on Reed St, they should check to see if there is a Reed Road with a similar addy and go knockin.

Update, she just talked to the buyer. He received the box, but no knife in it. She did not use any special sealing tape to seal the box, but when the buyer received it, there was a plastic or teflon tape that required cutting in order to open.

I had one recently where I shipped priority with DC to someone at a PO Box , DC shows as delivered , customer never got the package in his box , but did get someone elses package , the one I shipped is still MIA. I simply refunded the buyer his money. He did his part in getting me the $$$ , I felt as though it was on me until he got his end of the deal.

It was only $65 so foolishly I didn't insure ( my loss ).

... and that's what this friend needs to be doing as well. If the knife wasn't delivered and they didn't purchase insurance (unless no insurance was the buyer's request) then a refund to the buyer is in order.

Triton and JTW nailed it.

As the shipper/seller I always take the stance that it is my responsibility to get the knife into the hands of the person I am sending it to or issue a refund.

That is pretty much the bottom line and I do not make exceptions. Every one else's "mileage may vary", but I know that is the way I would want to be treated and actually expect to be treated when I purchase something that has to be delivered. The responsibility does not end when I ship the item as far as I am concerned.

Thanks for th help everyone. She's going to call USPS today to see if there's a possibility of the knife falling out. After that, she'll be issuing the buyer a refund. Thanks.
