Bad sounds

What about the sound of a knife hitting pavement? Or perhaps worst of all, the backspring breaking?
You mean like this? The ping of doom.

It ended up ok. I shipped it to Japan and Mr. Ohta repaired it, and sent it back no charge. The knife was at least a decade old. It left the US and I had it back, as good as new in under 2 weeks.

LOL! :D Funny where we pick stuff up! :) I haven't seen Jaws for decades I'm afraid, but I can recall having to explain, to younger friends, in relation to this scene, that beer cans were steel in those days, rather than aluminium :D

I watched it again last week, still a classic.
The sound doesn't bother but any knife scrapped across a dinner plate physically bothers my daughter.
What makes me cringe is when 1 of your kids borrows your knife & proceeds to stab the tip straight down through the food & you can hear the tip hit the plate😯 Had to show her how to use it.
I don't worry to much I use my knives.
I do have my own wooden chopping board. The wife uses plastic boards they do dull blades pretty quick.

😢 that would of brought a tear to your eye. Glad he stood by his workmanship😎

Look on the bright side. That was a very rare opportunity to fully clean out the joint. Not an easy thing to do with spring knives.

Did it really sound like a ping Gary? Every time someone here has posted about a broken backspring, they always describe the sound as a "ping."

Thirds on the ping sound, which I had a picture to go along with it! Definitely the worse sound, but a sharp blade against a glass cutting board (which has since mysteriously disappeared) is a close second

Boy, you're old! (I remember the steel cans too.)
I'll use my knife in a restaurant if I have to, and happy to use it on a board in the kitchen, in fact I'm happy to do just about anything with it in a pinch, but I have good crockery at home, as well as decent cutlery, and a sharp knife makes a mess of the glaze!:D In restaurants, I think that if they can't provide decent steak knives, sod their crockery! 🤣;)
If I use this "Brtitishism" around here, no one will understand me. But I love that phrase!

Dropped a SAK and chipped the scale. But it's just some kinda plastic, so that's okay. Didn't like the sound, though. I hate dropping knives!

I will happily use my pocketknife at a picnic, restaurant, etc. if it’s necessary. I don’t usually use it to eat at home. Once in a while I’ll use it for fruit or to slice something impromptu.

Steel cans and “church keys”. Responding to the OP, I worry more about the plate than the knife. The knife I can sharpen, the damage to the plate is permanent. The sound is a signal- you’re pressing too hard because your knife needs sharpening.

Surely the worst sound is the sound you'll never hear....when your knife slips out of your pocket to possible oblivion....
I have solved the problem of the stealthily escaping pocket knife by wearing only jeans, except for a couple of hours a week when I wear dress pants, and for those couple of hours I either leave my knife at home, or in the car. I do still keep the tiny MAM knife I have on my keyring at those times though.

As for plates - I pretty much never eat in restaurants, and if I did, I wouldn’t use my knife. Why? And at home I have kitchen knives and cheapo steak knives if needed.

There's a TV chef that uses the edge of her knife to scrape the cutting board. Drives me crazy. I can only imagine what the poor guy who has to maintain her knives must go through...
