"Bad things don't happen on the trail..." a/k/a "If she only had a pistol..."

Sad series of events..... still don't agree with the whole gun will save the day theory. I would like to see some statistics comparing attacks thwarted to attacks initiated with handguns. I don't claim to have all the facts... just my opinion. This is just one of a few isolated cases. Much more dangerous leaving the mall parking lot at night, I would think.

Poor girl.

Rick

Depending on whose statistics you chose to believe, armed citizens thwart quite a few attacks, much more than unarmed. My thinking on the matter is that with a gun at least I have a chance, without a gun not so much. I believe that on at least 2 occasions I have stopped an attack by displaying my firearm. Chris

EDIT: One of which was a deserted boat ramp in the middle of nowhere.

Rick,

Well, since we are not talking about homes, it wouldn't do much good to compare crimes thwarted versus initiated with handguns or any other implement in environments where law-abiding Citizens have basically been prevented or discouraged from carrying handguns and the criminals have always just done as they wanted to do. Criminals break the law, that's why they're criminals so in an environment like that, there is always going to be, statistically, more crimes initiated with weapons than prevented with weapons. That's because one class of people tend to have them and the other class tend to not have them.

Better to have a gun/weapon with you and not need it...........
.....than to need it and not have it. That's my .015.......

And, God forbid you ever do need to use it for personal protection; don't shoot to wound. ;)

Victim's family was from here in Colorado, I remember following the whole story At the time.

What this nice little synopsis doesn't include is what he did to her After he killed her, SOB needs to suffer a lot while in prison.

May God have mercy on his soul. I think he'll need it; and soon as he is 61. Tragic story for her and her family.

I dunno, hopefully a god would have something better on his schedule on the day mercies were handed out to people like this.

That sick MF'r abducted Cheryl Dunlap about 10 miles from my house from the side of a busy highway. I saw her car on the side of the road while driving to see family.

I'm 6'2"/265 so I take a lot for granted....but I bought my girlfriend a S&W Model 49 so I don't have to take it for granted that she is safe. We also got our CCW permits a couple of years ago together.

I'd rather have a 'fighting' chance than a 'get beat to death with a car jack' chance.

Rick,
I agree 100% that a gun is not a magic wand, and you can't just wave it and make the scary thing go away. But if you're a 24 year old woman with martial arts training and you're being subdued by an out-of-shape grandfather... it might be good to have a backup option more effective than harsh language and foot-dragging. I know, not all martial arts training is created equal, but I have no way of assessing her skill level. She managed to break his hand in the struggle, which leads me to think she'd stand a chance of walking away if she'd had a weapon. At least she fought him instead of going quietly to her death.

yea, the Judges/Lawyers/Prosecuters/Police all love that fact. Its GOOD BUSINESS for them.

no offense to those on the Blue line.

What kind of Martial Art did she train in where she was "grabbing at the blade and the big stick" I hope that's just a bad report of what really happend.

God please put me in a locked room for 10 minutes with him. he can even keep all his weapons. all I need is less than 1 minute, the other 9 minutes will be spent deciding if I want his weapons or not. :D

I really have to believe that bad things happen to bad poeple and his day will come soon.

We're going to do this again? Really?

OK, you're rolling your eyes and all of that, so there are protected, special topics that don't get discussed now? I mean, I don't click on threads that talk about convexing edges because I couldn't care less! So, if you couldn't care less, why bother upsetting yourself?

This is one of the main reasons we teach adrenal based self defense at my school. I'm sickened by the whole thing. And prison is too good for him. Short drop and sudden stop.

Well, we already went over this particular case, back when it happened. We've beat the "guns or no guns" thing to death. You know that. Do these threads ever end well? No. You know that, too. But, I know you like to stir the pot, so I guess I'll leave you to it. Thanks.

Lee,

Actually, I have read about so many murder cases over the years, I don't remember seeing this one on Bladeforums. But, as I said, I have read so many I might have forgotten it. I may have even participated in that thread, I have no recollection of doing so.

You're basically indicting me for posting something interesting that could be educational and informative and calling it "stirring the pot."

It's OK. There will be enough to agree with you.

Actually, Don, you're right. I apologize. I should not have said that. If you want to discuss this case, you've every right to. Personally, I feel the "guns in the woods" issue is not conducive to a friendly enviroment, simply because it is such a hot-topic for so many people. But, if some people enjoy debating it, that's ok. Again, sorry.

Carry if you want to. Don't carry if you don't want to. And don't tell those who choose to differently that they're ignorant, misinformed, irresponsible, etc.

That's my $0.02 CDN.

Thank you, Lee.

Maybe in one of these threads someone will say something that will change someone else's mind. Otherwise, what are we doing here? It's just another form of sharing information as far as I'm concerned.
