Bag Recommendation -- substitute for FATBOY?

Timbuk2 Messenger bags

You can usually find overstocks at Sierra Trading: http://www.sierratradingpost.com/Timbuk2.html

Good suggestion. Sierra rocks. One of my favorite online merchants. They stand behind anything they sell for the life of the product. Had a friend who bought a fly rod there, and it snapped on him while he was landing a fish. He chalked it up as gone. I mentioned the 100% guarantee to him over a year later, and sure enough, they replaced his fly rod with a comparable model.

When you do business with Sierra Trading Post, you’re getting the best guarantee out there. If you are not happy with your purchase for any reason, please return it to us for a full refund or exchange. This guarantee never expires! If you feel we have made a mistake in filling your order, we will gladly refund your shipping charges as well.

Those Timbuk2's look pretty low key and well-built too:

Maybe it’s the company’s working-class roots that have givenTimbuk2 such a steadfast following among real-life people. It all started in San Francisco back in 1989 with one bicycle messenger, a sewing machine, and some ideas about how a messenger bag ought to be constructed. The original Timbuk2 bag was quickly embraced by urban couriers and is now a favorite of laptop-toting professionals as well. Timbuk2 bags come in all shapes and sizes designed to carry files, cameras, travel gear and more. Their dependable construction, indestructible materials and sometimes quirky styles appeal to urbanites, students and career professionals looking for stylish alternatives to daypacks and briefcases. Timbuk2 bags are built so well, they’re been known to outlive jobs, personal relationships, even pets.

Those look like nice bags. Do they shed water or soak it up? Not a big fan of the buckles ... do any of them have zippers under the flaps or are they cinch cords?

The day packs have a cinch chord in the top. The nice thing with the design is that it can be crammed with what ever and it fits...kind of like loose, baggy saddle bags.
The field bag has no retention in the top other than the flap with the buckle.
Check out Duluth Pack's reasoning on canvas, they probably have something on their website. They are not oiled, but I've had great luck with them. If you expect to let them sit in the bottom of a canoe you'll want to line the insides or at least plastic bag the sensitive items. In rain or a morning dew bush whack they will seal up as they dampen.

If you wear corrective glasses, stay away from the oiled packs (Filson and others). Trust me;)

Matteo and Strabs, Duluth bags look nice, I'm really considering them, just wish there was something a little bit smaller...

that should go well with your black knee high vinyl boots, and black thong with chaps you usually wear.
;)

Well, I actually like the attention I get from the boots and chaps, jus trying to avoid looking too military...:thumbup:

Bro, that one is awesome! I hate to be so picky, but it's just a tad too small :(

I don't know, Eli. 8x10x3 seems pretty useful. Check it against your fatboy's stats. From the MAXP site:

Product Features

* Main : 9" x 8" x 3" with front and back subdividers
* Rear / CCW compartment: 9" x 8.5" with two rows of 2" x 6" loop field
* Frontal : 7" x 6.5" x 1.5" with mesh divider and internal keyper
* Side A : 6" x 3.5" x 2" with divider and double zippers to accommodate antenna
* Side B : 7" x 3.5" diameter with cinch (can be compacted for low profile carry)
* Top of lid pocket : 6.5" x 3" x 1"
* Shoulder : Integral 2" strap (min 40" / max 60") with 2" non-slip shoulder pad
* Empty Weight: 1.8 lbs
* Attach : Velcro quick release belt loop
* Optional accessories (sold separately): #3501 Universal CCW Holster, #3502 Triple Magazine Holder, #3503 Dual Mag. Retention Insert, Grimloc Carabiner D-Ring, MAXPEDITION 32 oz. Wide-Mouth Nalgene Bottle

So, you're losing the bottle pocket and bigger extra compartments, but the main pocket is about right, and you've got your less obvious pistol-packing pouch right there. This is for obviously for when you throw on the Dockers and Duckhead. ;):D

Or...you could always go with:

or

http://www.saddlebackleather.com/satchel.asp

Though that would be bad because Saddleback bags are like INFI...once you get one you'll be looking for all sorts of reasons why you could possibly need another. It's terrible, I tell ya.

xaman, tour the Duluth Pack website. They have a wide array of sizes and styles. They list all the dimensions I believe.

Yeah, on paper it's similiar, but the main compartment on the maxpedition allows me to put my 11" laptop in, and extend the flap/buckle to accomodate something a little larger. The fixed zipper on the Coronado wouldn't allow for that (about half the time i need the computer...)

OKAY, now we're getting somewhere -- that one looks amazing :thumbup:

But a little pricey :eek: (think they would trade me for some sheathwork or maybe a swamprat :D)

Eli...I'll tell ya, brother...Dave's bags are worth the money. A year ago I couldn't conceive of spending Busse money on a knife, now I've owned more than 10, and a few over 800$. If you spend the money on a Saddleback bag, you'll NOT regret it at all.

And honestly, that price isn't even that bad. I spent almost twice that on the one in the pics I posted above. If you check that auction site, sometimes you can find them for a bit cheaper. Dave's name on that site is "againsttheflow."

Seems like you decided, brother? Gonna tell us, or just wait til you can get pics of it?

.

I picked up one of these today from REI (Recreational Equipment Inc.), it is 15" X 12.5" X 6" and is called the Novara Buzz Messenger bag, comes in black and brown. I wasn't looking for something like this, but they were on sale and then another 50% off! The original price was $70.00 and I got it for about $27.45! I usually carry around a backpack at the knife and gun shows, but it gets heavy, this will be much lighter when I need something smaller. I like the suttle flames on the shoulder strap also.

Feel the love! :p

That's a nice pack. I may have to swing by REI tomorrow and have a look.
