Bag Recommendation -- substitute for FATBOY?

Well...a lot of you know Wifey is pregnant. She's at 20 weeks now, and this past week developed a hell of a cold. So bad her lungs were hurting, so the OB made us go in to the ER. Needless to say, it was a pretty good little trial run. They found out she has bronchitis and put her on Zithromax.

All of that is important, of course, but the real clincher is that wifey decided we need a good overnight bag. Then she looked over at me and she knew: oh no, you're gonna get another Saddleback bag aren't ya?

She knows me so well.:D

Make sure we get pics when it arrives, Eli. You'll be VERY satisfied with the quality and look.

ETA: Wifey is MUCH better after a quick burst of antibiotics.

Glad she's okay

And I did pull the trigger this morning on the satchel... Hope it's not too small, I'll definitely get some pics up when it arrives.

BTW, while looking at the saddleback site, my little girl saw the 6x8 pouch and said "ooooh, I want one..."

Well, at $125 I thought I'd make her one first. Here's what came of it, she's happy :):

That's a fantastc first attempt, Eli. Your daughter must love it.

I'm pretty sure that when you get your satchel you will want to try again, tho.

Oh yeah bro, that's another world for sure... I don't know if I have the patience to endure that kind of project, LOL. All those pockets and liners and such, it might make me lose my cool

Thanks again for the link to saddleback, I'm really looking forward to getting this one in

I'll tell you what I told the last Hog brother I helped out:

Some day (scratches at chin with pinky and ring finger) I'm going to come to you for a favor. Now...that day may never come, but...

;):D

I'm cursing you right now.....after reading this thread I've been on that saddleback site non-stop. What killer looking stuff.

My 24/7 bag is a Tumi extra-wide (16"W x 6"D x 13"H) and it has served me beyond my highest expectations for 365d a year going on five years now traveling 7d a week for 50 weeks a year. Over 800 flights, few hundred train rides, and 1,300 hotel nights I couldn't ask for more....heck it could have failed two years ago and I wouldn't have had a bad thing to say :)

Last week was the first catastrophic functional damage when the zipper ripped from away from the seam for about 2". Sadly it was at the top of one of the sides so I label it catastrophic as 9" of the bag cannot be zipped closed.

Easy free repair for Tumi, but thanks to you!!! :) I am thinking maybe she deserves a rest...and would a saddleback bag take over nicely for an abusive lifestyle.

Saddleback's documentary style descriptions of the materials and design choices are what sold me. I'm very into "how" a bag is designed which to me tells the complete story on how it will function. The Tumi triple layer corners all around did their job and prevented any catastrophic failure on the bag's structure.

The Saddleback gentleman made me laugh out loud when he said he will never use a zipper which is the weakest point on many high-end backs.....perfect timing to read such a thing, when my zipper literally failed no more than a week ago, LOL :)

They sound to be made with quality which is extremely rare to see these days. Size is a concern and long term weight tolerance. My daily load is 36lbs and it will never drop below say 34lbs...the best I could hope for is 32lbs. I've sent an email asking his thoughts on that weight for his briefcase model 365d a year. If he says it would be good to go, or could provide some custom re-enforcement where he things it's needed I'll probably pick up an extra-large briefcase. The dimensions are the only ones that sound as if they would accommodate what carry now and match my bag the closest.

Here's a second "thanks!" for the saddleback mention....great reading on that website and if all goes well I'll have a new back in the near future.

Group buy!?!?!?!?

:D:D:D

I'd be in for a group buy. I need an overnight bag.:D

DN: I don't feel bad doing it to ya because I know you'll be satisfied. I'm a teacher...and my bag is always packed with stuff. I can't say it hits 40lbs, but it's gotta get close from time to time. I'm sure Dave will tell you his bags can handle the weight.

Now I wonder if he'd take an SFNOLE in trade for an overnighter.;):D

Here are a few different ones I've found in my personal search for "the bag".

I can tell you that the second one down (the black one) is a Kifaru Tailgunner I.

I guess I'm getting old because it just looks like a "Man Purse" to me...in other words it just looks Gay.
But hey, if your in to that go for it!

I think that has more to do with the model (or the wearer) than the bag itself. Some dudes could wear anything and NEVER look "funny." (don't you remember Dave Brown's pink polk-a-dot sheath?) :D

BTW Chuck, I don't think you are one of the guys that has to worry about looking confused
