Balisong as a user?

Anybody have any experience carrying a Bali as a user? They're legal in Texas now and my fiancé loves them. Been eyeing a few, but am wondering how they hold up as just a plain old knife.

Now I carry a 50lb bag of tools at work. I don't need to pry, baton, etc. with it. Breaking down heavy duty cardboard is really about as tough a task as it will ever see. Will a good ($200-300) one hold up?

Feel free to post some pics too.

A good balisong is arguably the strongest folding knife you could own. Pivots can occasionally wear out but usually this is seen in defective or inferior cheap balis. If you want one for EDC I highly recommend a bradley mayhem. The curved handles dont make it the greatest flipper but I have not found a better EDC balisong in the production world.

I carried and used a bali that I made... despite illegality, for over 6 months. They work just as well as any other knife, just more fun to play with.

I'd absolutely EDC a balisong.

But the state of Washington thinks I might take out an entire shopping mall, possessed by its overwhelming evil and all.

I edc a benchmade 62 sometimes and would definitely recommend it. Functions well as just a knife and even if you are not a flipper, it certainly is fun to play with.

My father carried a old school Benchmade for 10 years as a lineman. He loved it. And he was really rough on his blades....lots of wire stripping and cutting all kinds of synthetics.

For most of the 90's I was a stagehand/roadie and I carried a Benchmade balisong that my Dad gave me for my birthday one year. It was Alaska, so I could carry whatever I wanted and nobody batted an eyebrow as long as it wasn't a full size kabar. The only opening I used would be to pull it from the belt sheath and drop it open holding the clasp, pop it up, and lock it in place. There's probably a technical name for it, but I neither know nor care. What mattered was that I almost instantly had a sharp, solid knife held in an icepick grip with the blade facing me--very useful for trimming tape and tie line. As a flat out work knife, it was pretty awesome both due to the Benchmade quality and the solid lockup provided by the mechanics of a balisong. I would totally still EDC it if I hadn't moved to a place where they would probably shoot me if they suspected I had one in my pocket. I don't know if you would get $300 worth of good out of it, but I put years of work on mine, and the action is still smooth and the lockup is still rock-solid.

My Archangel was my letter opener at my work desk for some 15 years. Opened a lot of boxes and packages as well.

I use to carry a BM 67 for fun. Yes! Yes they can be great users...plus...with Benchmade's warranty. ..how can you go wrong. If you shop around you can get them for around 200-250.

I carried balis for 20 years. It was all I used back then. One I carried for 10 years or so, it was a cheapie too.

The BM 53 8 a great user knife. Perfect blade shape, good enough grip, and fun to flip!

I disagree for edc.
From a practical standpoint
A normal folder will open faster and be more durable.

Even a cheap balisong is about $100 anything below will break in the first month if not week.

Buy a bali because there cool. The lock is overrated.

I carried a Japanese made $20 bali for most of the 1980's. Held up fine, and wasn't a bad utility knife even with a bayonet-style blade with a live back edge.

I carried a cheap Japanese Bali in the 80's for years that thing was flipped God knows how many times and it never failed. I can't and wont carry one these days but they are certainly durable and I could open mine very fast with either hand.
