Balisong as a user?

A normal folder will open faster and be more durable.
Faster, yes. More durable... I disagree.

Buy a bali because there cool. The lock is overrated.
The lockup on a balisong makes it as close to a fixed blade as any folding knife will get.

Yeah, because a Kershaw-made Bradley Kimura will break in a week.
Not a bad little bali. Too bad they quit making them. They needed an ambidextrous pocket clip, too.

I carried my 32 Morpho for quite a while. The handle was just a hair too short for my wide hands, but the 51 is just a tad too long for my pockets. The Bradley Mayhem is just about perfect, but they didn't make a lefty-friendly version of it.

What I really want is an ambidextrous clip on a bali with a blade about 3.5-3.75" with handles slightly longer.

I'd like about the exact same thing. I'm not lefty, but carry lefty a lot and am just as capable with a BaliYo in my left hand as my right(until I go to write with it). I've found in the past that the 4+ inch Balis were a bit too big. Never handled a 32. My hands aren't all that big so it might do just fine.

I'm not super concerned about durability. As long as it can handle general use it'll be fine. I have enough knives that none are truly every day carry. More like every once in a while carry.

My 51 Morpho is every bit as capable of EDC as my 710, 610, 808, 940, ect....

Nothing wrong with using them after all that's what they are made for.

Well then perhaps you should visit knifeworks.com and get a BM 51 in D2 steel. You get a free H&K P30 as a bonus buy for your "other edc".

My Brother in law EDC'd this one for years. When I got my hands on it, it was a wobbling mess. I sent it off to Matt Cook and this is what came back. Needless to say it's been retired.

The bill has passed, but I think it's not effective until September. Just a word of caution :)

I disagree for edc.
From a practical standpoint
A normal folder will open faster and be more durable.

Even a cheap balisong is about $100 anything below will break in the first month if not week.

Buy a bali because there cool. The lock is overrated.

I haven't flipped my Kimura in a while, but I dropped it plenty of times when I did and it's still doing just fine. I even have a cheap m-tech twist-style balicomb that's been dropped even more than my Kimura and it still hasn't fallen apart. They've both lasted much longer than a month.
Plenty of people EDC them and use them as regular old knives and they work just fine.

Cool, with my experience it wasn't until I bought a 51 that I finally had one that didn't fall apart. When the zen pens started wearing out after a few months of heavy flipping, Benchmade took great care of me as well. Even fixed worn torxs screws for free.

In my first post I stated balisongs below $100 are not worth it. The Kimura is above $100

A word of caution though, there is no warranty for Kimuras.

Balisong will cut as well as any other folder of similar size, blade shape and grind geometry. Just don't expect to chop down trees or pry open sewer covers with it!
But it is NOT a good choice for EDC even if it's legal in your locale.
It's better to just keep it at home in your collection and only play with it sitting on your couch watching TV!
Here is 2 scenario's that will most likely happen if you carry it as EDC.
1st: Eager beaver ignoramus LEO finds balisong on you and arrests you for having "Gravity" knife which are still illegal in most locales, now you have been arrested need to spend thousands of $$$ on lawyer to have your case dismissed, which most judges will do because they know your knife is perfectly legal. Now you're out of money and time wasted, because of fool in uniform!
2nd: Dirty corrupt LEO decides he wants your shiny $300 balisong so he will give you a choice get arrested for illegal "Gravity" knife or he can let you go with a warning but he will "Confiscate" your knife.
If you try to argue with him he will most likely arrest you for disobedience, resisting arrest or some other BS charge!
Russian saying "If there is a way we will find reason, if there is a reason we will find the way!" applies to many situations and all cops around the world!
End result you are in jail and need lawyer!
BTW true story happened about 20yrs ago to friend of mine, he was more than happy to let cop keep his cheap $20 balisong rather than go to jail!
Will you be as happy to let cop keep your $300 knife?

PS personally I would NOT carry any knife worth more than $150, that I would risk my life or freedom over to keep it!
If I break, lose, throw away (get rid off incriminating evidence), or it gets confiscated I wouldn't be happy about it but wouldn't lose any sleep over it either!
No evidence no case!
That's how 99% of people get caught they keep expensive ex: gun, knife watch, ring, etc. instead of getting rid off, that contains DNA/blood and lose their freedom instead!

In ancient times we had only 2 choices for rapid deploying SD knives switchblades and balisongs, it was worth legal hassle and risk to carry it as EDC.
Now days we have better choices ex: flippers, dual thumb studs, holes, waves etc, you get same rapid fire deployment without legal PIA!

BTW same problem exists with assisted opening knives, big PIA from law in most places without actual benefit of faster opening.
According to DA dude had legal size blade, but because it was assisted opening cops arrested him and murdered him in police custody!
Here is what I would like to know, how did cops who arrested him know he was carrying illegal assisted opening knife in his pocket, he never opened it in front of them! Can any of you tell what type of opening knife just by looking at clip sticking out of someone's pocket? Apparently cops can! They must be psychic! Cops said they arrested man for having illegal knife, but they wouldn't know it was illegal until they arrested him! Catch 22!

Some modern excellent manual opening knives are faster than full switchblades!

I don't like switchblade's and assisted openers because their are unstable in hand when opening. If spring is week it will not lock open or if spring too strong it will kick knife right out of your hand! You will have better solid grip on handle with manual opener.

Sorry if I went on a little rant, in conclusion its always better to carry legal EDC that will not cause you problems later even if you are justified in using it.
Remember dude who defended himself on subway from punks but went to jail for having illegal gun?

The Mayhem and Morpho are fantastic EDCs. I highly recommend them.

All valid points, though I'm not sure about the "incriminating evidence" bit. However, I don't fear my local LE and yes, I'm ok with the unlikely possibility of losing a $300 knife.

I agree balisongs with pins became wobbly very quickly and need to be hammered back, the more expensive models that have nut and screw are better, you can tighten them yourself.

I carried and used a bali that I made... despite illegality, for over 6 months. They work just as well as any other knife, just more fun to play with.

If I could get one that looks like that, reminiscent of the BM42, I'd try my hand at EDC'ing one. The only one I have is a Spyderfly. It's nice (and the wire clip is great) but not the best ergos for flipping or EDC. It has a special place though as it is a free replacement from a member here, after the one I purchased was stolen by a co-worker.

I wish there was a good budget bali the way there are good budget knives but, so far no luck.

The Microtech Tachyon 3 should be out soon. Ti channel handles with integral pocket clip and .160" Elmax for $350. For $369, BRS Alpha Beast 3.0 will be available soon. Those are good budget balisongs.

Great news. I'm hoping to start a new, more stable job soon, and after that I hope to save enough for something like that after a few months' work. (I know, sounds like a long time to save so little but, that's how it is). Hopefully they won't be too hard to find after that.

The BRS AB3.0 will probably sell out in a couple days... all of them.
