Ball bearing lock disengaging?

I don't know if I'm allowed to post links but since it seems people are struggling to find it:

Scroll down a ways until you get to "reviews with videos" where the second video clearly shows a lock failure. Either way I already placed an order for one elsewhere from a reliable dealer, obviously not Amazon where I'd never buy Spydercos from. I had good success with the little manix never failing that I'll take my chances with the xl.
This knife is not reaching lockup in the first place, yea the spring is too short or the pin holding the lock backspacer is missing, or the backspacer has been ground to be too long.

The only other smaller manix lightweight I've owned definitely did not need its spring lightened. I never understood why people did this to a knife that locks up solidly. They must be use to the flimsy omega springs.

People have been whining about the CBB lock being too hard to release since the Manix 2 came out. I think it's because they wanted a Spyderco Axis lock. They want to be able to release the lock with one fingertip. Nevermind that tip up and weak closing bias is a recipe for coming open in your pocket, they need their fidget factor. Most of them use their knives as fidget toys more than tools anyway.

It has to be the most resistant spring setup of any similar mechanism I've handled. That's not a bad thing. Many are definitely too soft.

I modify a lot of my users but never touch the spring(or any part of lockup) to lighten tension…to be honest didn’t even know it was a “thing” 🙄

Well the Manix XL arrived quick, got it in my hands today. It is a beast and locks up perfectly, very smooth, and perfectly centered blade. It fits my hand like a glove and I didn't think my hands were that big. All the jimping people complain about to me is a non-issue. It feels locked in, I don't think I could ever accidentally drop this knife even if I wanted to.

It's got like the same profile as the smaller manix, just a bit longer with a pommel. I would recommend to take an evening or two to work in the "manix click" though, when they're new the detent can be a bit strong. Just open and close it a bunch to wear a track into the detent on the lock backspacer

I always cringe when people install lighter springs or cut a few coils off a cbbl. Lighter spring tension=weaker lock. Same thing goes if you lighten the spring tension on a back lock, or bend the lock bar out on a frame lock. I guess it’s cool to sacrifice safety for fidget factor in the knife world.

I have had my 154CM Manix as part of my EDC rotation for around 13 years.

Never had the lock actually fail like that. The cage did break on mine but made a Ti one for it. I still carry it.

11 years later the cage broke and not in one of the most convenient places.

I was fortunate to find it, in the back of the LDV, and we got stuck that took a few hours to dig ourselves out of.

So, what to do…make a new one.

Grab some Ti, though I did not have thick enough stock.

Do some measurements and machining.

While taken apart I sorted the protruding tip.

I do like the diamond shape of the tip.

Didn't think of the cage breaking, but yea it sticks out a lil. Do you know why it broke?

Another possibility is a previous owner took it apart, cut the spring too short or replaced with a weaker spring, didn't like the outcome and returned it under Amazon's "no questions return policy", the knife got returned to stock and sold to this person. With Amazon fulfillment, you never know what you're actually getting. That's why they are no longer authorized Spyderco dealers.

For the record, I have about 20 caged ball lock knives, many of them factory seconds, some of which have been used ungently, and I've never had one fail. I've also never lightened the spring on one.
100% people are scummy. I bought a worksharp on there and it came missing the stones that someone stole and sent back to amazon who then sold it to me. Since then i dont get anything like that on there. Id rather pay a little more and be sure im not getting someones return

I seem to remember reading that the older translucent cage had a bit of a breaking problem (probably issues with the material itself?) but then Spyderco resolved that by changing to the black ones.

No idea. The knife was jammed in the open position half the cage was gone. Seems to have sheared.

Mine was one of the first generations. Afterwards I know Spyderco changed the composition so the newer ones come with the black cage.

Gorgeous regrinds by the way, I also like the look of the ground tip. It looks like your manix in particular saw enough action to merit the cage wearing out. Not too worried about mine it's just a zip tie and cardboard remover

Thank you.

It was my primary knife during my drilling rig days and still part of my EDC rotation at home and odd jobs on the mine.

Think you will be alright.
