ball head war clubs.

First post for me, a friend showed me a Indian club made with a stone-- fastened with what appears to be a leg skin rawhide.
If anyone has any info or experience with this type club, I would like to hear it.
Might have to experiment some - looks like a slow build.

Can you get some better picture's of the Stone Head War Club, I like that Hawk "Look's Good" where did you get the Hawk from ? Ya try and get some better picture's of that Club "It Look's Top Heavy ! And Welcome to BladeForum's well I guess you've been here for 5 Month's "But I like your first post !

Snake Dr,
Don't know much about the club, passed down to my friend. Unknown if it was locally made (nj). Not too top heavy, nice balance. He seems to think there is a face carving on the head- looks like a natural crease in the stone to me lol.
The hawk is one that I knocked up for my boys to throw. Made from a cheap import hatchet. The eye was drifted, head cut and reshaped, heat treated into it's current state.

Ok.Here's my NEW club at it started out.......

I was about 40 feet up the bank to get that one.The river has flooded hard over the last few years and totaled all the trees lower down.I got the tree on Friday....

That's what it looked like by Sunday.I have it drying in my room on top of my dvd rack.I'm thinking of picking up some wood stabilizer for another project and I'm thinking about giving it a good dousing when the time comes. It should harden it up a lot after it's dry and all sanded.I used my Aurora and some wood chisels to shape it with some help from a hand saw.

so the blank should first be dried, then rough shaped? or rough shaped then left to dry out? and when all is said is done, what kind of treatment would you recommend? linseed oil perhaps?

I love these clubs. I ran across some advice a long time ago for making a self bow. Harvest the wood in February when sap levels are at the lowest, hang in a cool dry place to cure for about a year I believe. Then start shaping.

On mine I use a couple coats of minwax stain followed by a couple light coats of satin polyurethane.

Thank's for the Info. and picture's Visitor, Your Friend has a Nice War Club look's Well Made "I like It !" The work you did on them Hawk's Is Awesome, You made them from cheap Hatchet's ! Your Mod's are Awesome "Them are Real Nice" you do some Great Work, I like that Hawk style, Thank's again for all the picture's,

Your getting It Done "SavagesicSlayer", You got something started here In this Topic "It's Great "And your Ball Head War Club Is taking shape ! We got Ton's of exposed root system's here In Eastern Nebraska on the Bank's of the Missouri River, Most of the Tree's though are Cotton Wood's some Mulberry though, I wonder If Mulberry would be a Good Wood to use ?

We do got Willow's though and I did a seach on Google and In Wikpedia It said this on Willow Root's, This might be my Wood !

Willows all have abundant watery sap; bark which is heavily charged with salicylic acid; soft, usually pliant, tough wood; slender branches; and large, fibrous, often stoloniferous roots. The roots are remarkable for their toughness, size, and tenacity of life, and roots readily grow from aerial parts of the plant.

south of my town, cedar is abundant, very abundant. this seems to be a relatively hardwood. the hard part about this will be finding a long enough and straight enough tree to begin with. there is also oak, which should yield more profit. well see. i think this thread gave a lot of people a new hobby, like any of us need another. well done none the less

Dang, Snake Doctor, I really dig that wolf-effigy ball club in the first link. I'd like to see somebody do a cougar in similar style with his jaws and fangs closing over the ball.

Thanks for the comments- I think I will try to re-produce the club this winter. After I get some deer to lend me thier leg skins.

"Projects" is one thing I have plenty of....time and money are another matter lol.
Thanks for the comments on the hawks/ trade axes. I'm trying to complete some from scratch, have lots to learn and give props to all the Makers out there.
Those were made/ moded just to practice with the drift, heat treat, finish.
The finish is parkerizing- next time I will embelish with stamped/ engraved designs filled with silver solder for some contrast under a blued or parked finish.

While I wait for my club to dry out I decided to get one of the cold steel ones as a hold over.for 45 beans(cdn)I couldn't pass them up.

I've actually been considering one of those too. Not real fond of plastics, but it's better than nothing. Let us know what you think of it.
