The Bamboo Cutter – A Special Knife

While traveling west of Nepal, along the road to Pokhara village, I could not miss the bamboo forests that dotted the countryside. The bamboo was as tall as some trees and each stalk was several inches thick.

The villagers use the bamboo to make household and farm products, as well as to build the actual huts they used for various purposes on their farms. The bamboo was very tough to cut and they need a special knife to harvest what they need for their daily use.

Cutting the tough bamboo stalks into sections 4" to 6" long, the villagers hollow out the bamboo and make drinking cups for their own households. Beautiful woven baskets can be seen in many a shop or villager's homes, a perfect example of their creative talents.

Some local craftsmen make musical flutes from the bamboo and the tunes they play can be heard coming from their homes as they relax after the evening meal.

This knife has been used by villagers living near a stand of bamboo for decades. We have been fortunate to get a supply of that same tough
bamboo cutter knife they use every day and can offer them to you now.

Stunning! I really, really love the design! The "pretty" stuff has its place, but there is something about the elegant lines that result from Bura, a hammer, and a design that is purpose driven.

This could be a do it all camp knife for those that find the recurve of the khukuri to be too much. The wife's catalytic converter went out, though. so there goes my fun money for the month:(

Some shark is going to be very, very lucky:D:thumbup:

This is the first new HI product I have seen make its debute! :)

Bamboo forests in Nepal ...I had thought of it only as a plant from Chinese/Japan/South East Asian.

Another future addition to a growing collection?;)

Munch, bamboo is everywhere. You can find it (or something that looks identical to it) in South America as well.

Thanks Rad, didn't realise it was so abundant.

In Australia where it didn't reach until white colonisation, it is classified as a invasive pest, with many local authorities banning it from being planted even in suburban gardens!

It Isnt just a tropical thing either, We have various stands of wild bamboo growing here in new york, and it grows really fast when the weather is warm, it dies during winter and regrows every spring.

I've seen that pattern of machete before. Cuts like crazy. But that is so much nicer than a stamped piece of sheet metal.

We have bamboo here in FL also -- when the squirrels don't eat it.

I can't believe this beaut is still here  IMHO, I think i like this design better than the HI Bolo, and I REALLY like the bolo:p

bolo? what bolo? *looks around* i too would like to know if it's fully hardened or has a sweet spot.

Oh no! Another tempting HI offering! If villagers of this design were offered somewhere down the road, I could probably be seduced into picking one up... or a blem... or hell, if I pay off my debts and the bug bites me bad enough. :D

Wow... that looks just like the thing I need to cut down those anise reeds... email sent!

Phew, I'm saved! :D

I feel a wee bit of envy that I won't be the one to own the first HI Bamboo Cutter, and yet my bank account thanks you!

Still, be sure to let us know how she performs.. I may still be interested in one down the road.

Well Yangdu did say...
