Bamboo Fishing Spear

LOL ..... I remember playing w/ bamboo and having bandages on my fingers...always getting cut with it, Ya' know ... Young,Dumb....etc lol

Looks Great , you did an excellent job bro !
bamboo can splitter and the splits can be razor sharp themselves !

I ALWAYS wear gloves when handling wood of any kind:eek:, especially Bamboo. Been cut too many times, and big bad splinters plain suck:barf:

I seldom wear gloves at all...but sometimes wish I had. But dried bamboo slivers can pass through most gloves...

That's neat, I have some bamboo in my front yard that I should give that a try.

Well...this is the first one I've made that I got no blood on (my own)....yet. Patience is a friend here...don't get in a hurry.

Haha, thanks! I got the picture when everybody was talking about cuts, blood, and nasty splinters. I've messed with bamboo before but I never noticed, I'll be extra careful.

A quick and easy metal fishing head is to bind bicycle spokes around the outside of a pole then sharpen the threaded ends . If slightly spread out like the bamboo they tend to spring apart over the catch and then hold the fish under tension , some small notches on the inside diameter of your spoke ring helps to keep it there as well . But that i s a cool spear

Bear Grylls recently had to evacced out of the 'Nam jungle because he cut himself so badly on bamboo splinters. There was some pictures on one of the sub-forums. Almost lost one of his fingers.

It can be vicious if you don't pay attention and get in too big of a hurry...I've had small slivers of dried bamboo stuck deep in my hand and most of the way through a finger before when I was a kid.

Nice job! I've made plenty of bamboo spears but never with that seperation ring you made. I like it! Usually I just put two branches between the tines to form a cross inside and lash them together. It works, but your way is much cooler.

Thanks, the reason I had to move the final finished product out of the BK7 thread was that ring...I cheated and used a hand saw to make that ring, but then liked how it looked too much not to put it in it. However I have since played around with the bamboo some and learned that I do have a knife that I could make this whole spear with, ring and all, using only that one knife but that will be a later thread.

Good job all in all, thanks for the work you put in. I have some metal frog gigs laying around in my gear pile, works on fish too.

I have had a few...but then there are so many ways to make one if I need one I quit carrying them.
