Bamboo

Well i got my bamboo Thanks STeven

Its a snowy day and I just came in from plowing So perfect day to cut some bamboo in garage

As STeven said it is very thick walled stuff . I told STeven i would cut it free standing meaning I just sawed the ends square and balanced them on my work mate

On the smaller pices I used a pretty standard Browning Barker/Crowell cutting knife and on the thicker pieces I used a Raptor katana designed by STeven,s buddy James Williams

I know I look like a Silver Back Gorilla but I had fun had clean cuts and did not damage anything

STeven next time send more:D

Thanks Buddy Guys don't laugh to hard Sorry for bad pics old lady gotta new camera still trying to use it

Hey Joe, nice cuts. Looks like a lot of fun..... Should've gotten in line to get some
of that bamboo......

Looks like you'll be getting more plow time in down there.

It's a rainy 42 deg. here....almost feels like springtime. Nice to see this snow melting off.

Well, lunchtime is over, I better get back to work. Really, I'm not kidding!

talk to you soon,
David

Thanks for the pictures Joe, it looks like fun. It's fun looking at all the stuff in your garage too.

People are always complaining that there are not enough "hard use" photos posted, and Joe's pic got like three responses.

This is not about me.

He took the effort to saw the bamboo square, cut FREESTANDING in a timely manner in front of a camera and post asap.....and the crickets are chirping.

It's because he makes it look easy, imo.

It ain't easy.

Thats okay STeven the only one I cared about seeing it was you buddy :D

Thanks again for the Bamboo

Good cutting is fun and I know if I ever needed to I could take a mans hand off with one blow :)

I sure enjoyed the action shots, Joe !
This was a very cool thing for you to do, STeven !

Were those 45 degree cuts, Joe ?

Doug

Nice stuff Joe & Steven. Looks like fun. I was thinking that bamboo might be a little older aged w/ 1/2" thickness. Joe making short work of it!

To quote a fellow collector who recently opined: "When I'm reincarnated I want to come back as Joe Paranee." :)

Nice cuttin'.

I have not cut for awhile but close to 45 :D

I see alot of people cut and they plant there feet and swing the knife with there arm

I use my whole body mostly wrist, back and hips but I can cut much better when i put my whole body in it

Just noticed this, that cutting looks FUN! I've hardly cut anything like that. One day with the right blade i'd love to mess around. Still haven't owned a "chopper".

^^^ Gotta have at least one big knife you can beat on, Jon.

Roger

Trust me not having one yet is killing me!

I have tons of fun chopping down things with my smaller knives but obviously those aren't good for it.

Enjoyed the action shots, Joe. I am a little 'green' on bamboo, STeven...are certain species of it better than others for cutting? I just found out my brother-in-law has a pretty good batch of it here in Missouri. He said it was 'running bamboo'. I assume it would be good to use for testing? It is probably 10-foot plus high, and was just laid down during our recent ice storm. Might be a good time to harvest some for use. What do you think?

All bamboo is fine for cutting. Some is very thin wall, some of it is freakishly thick like this stuff and that makes it a challenge.

The ice storm cull should work out just fine.

I just saw this thread again. THANKS JOE! How do you find that knife for Cutting?

Cool cutting Joe! I did'nt know Silverbacks had such speed/coordination :D

I know the 'regular' bamboo I get from my neighbor is difficult enough to cut cleanly, would like to get a hold of some of this for a comparison. Won't embarress myself though trying to cut it free standing ( i know my limits)

How you liking that Browning's handle? I got two of them because the price was right and managed to do a not so good reshaping job on the first one, the second one I'm taking it a little slower and more deliberate (although the first one fits my hand really good, just would'nt want to have an MS or any pro 'critique' it) Thank's again for the Action Shots, Mac

hey...um...if you have some still around, my sensei said he's game to cut some;)

My neighbor and I will be culling a fairly large section from his side of the fence:eek: this weekend....do you want it sent to the dojo or to your house?

Best Regards,
