Banged Out My First Blade

The first blade you have made would be a very nice gift to your boss if he has helped you as you have said.

As your skills improve you can make him a nicer one to compare.

The more I look at it and work on it, the more I think the same thing.

He does a fair amount of butchering and sausage making so I think it would actually be ideal for that kind of stuff.

Thanks panch0.

I worked on it again tonight and to my amazement, almost all those marks came out with just a few minutes on the sander.

I think it'll be ready to eopxy and peen together tomorrow.

I made a couple of ferrules out of a couple slices of copper pipe and gave the guard it's final shape.

I have decided to keep it and offer my boss the option to specify what kind of knife he wants.

it is also done, well I have to fine a better ball peen happer to peen over the tang some more on the butt cap cause the tang started destroying my cheap chinese hammer, even after two tempers with the tang going beyond 'gray' color both times.

Thanks for looking and all the nice comments.

I still haven't made a knife for myself....

Keep saying it'll be the next one, or that I want to get better first. So far I've given all mine away, including my practice dummies that aren't even hardened.

I want to do some destructive testing with this one, hacking on some 2x4's and a piece of hardwood to see how my HT holds up. I think I maybe got it a little too hot on the last one but it was hard to tell as the blade was buffed and colors seem to move very strangely on a mirror finish piece.

I didn't want to get 'too' destructive with the testing so I simply cut off a piece of a 2x4 with the knife and it made no apparent difference in it's ability to shave hair or push cut paper afterwards. It's a fairly light knife for a chopper so I wasn't up to making a second cut :)

No rounding of the edge but there was some slightly noticeable 'nicks' for lack of a better word, that would only be measureable with a micrometer. a couple swipes with the hone and it was all smooth again.

I purposely plunged the tip into a knot and it rounded it over as it should have from taking the tip to blue in the tempering. Again, a couple of swipes with the hone and it was all good again.

I think she's a keeper.
