Everytime I search a knife I'm always finding myself in this site so I decided to create an account. Anyway I purchased a bravo 1 in 3v. It's an amazing knife I have to say. Until recently there's a guy that posted on YouTube regarding his GSO 10 rust. His Cpm 3v pits and mine doesn't. If I cut a lemon and leave it for maybe a minute I could already see some strong patina forming.

Then I decided to do an xray on handles and to my surprised the way the tang was skeletonized, it's the same as a bravo 1 in A2. I spoke to bark river regarding this problem and I was told that it's indeed an A2 steel and asked me to send my knife and it will get replaced (great service) although I'm puzzled on how many bravo 1 3v owners out there that might have an A2 without knowing.

How did you know there was supposed to be a difference in tang construction? If one is skeletonized and the other is not there would be a pretty noticeable difference in weight/ balance point.

I found out about it through Google as well as one of my favorate youtuber virtuovice.

Mike Stewarts pleasant disposition, poor grinding and now who knows what steel you get when you order! What is not to love about Bark River?

I had a custom maker make me a knife in 3v and also wondered how I could actually tell, he could give me 440 a and charge me for super steel.

Good detective work! I bet most people wouldn't have noticed. I'm wondering- did the mistake lie with Bark River, or the dealer of theirs you bought the knife from? That is, did Bark River mislabel the knife when they shipped it to the dealer, or did the dealer just send you the wrong item by accident?

If you can't tell the difference between 440 and 3V in use, then purchasing a knife in anything other than 440 is probably a waste of your money.

I purchased mine from DLT. indeed it had a 3V mark on the knife. i tried taking photos of it but since i've had the knife for almost a year and been sharpened the logos are faded and phone camera can't capture it. (need a better camera) lol. you can still see it with a naked eye. when i send it i will include the box and receipt of purchase.

Is there any way to find out what steel a knife is made of, except maybe sending a sample to a laboratory ?

My exact thoughts....

i think whats best for them to do is product recall like what Gerber did when their machetes were failing and might cause injury to the user. its really disappointing to see a great knife manufacturer with this non-conformance. as a certified internal auditor (contractor) this is disheartening

I'm sending a link of this thread to my favorite BR retailer as a heads up, and also to let them know that I won't be purchasing any more until I'm satisfied that this is taken care of, and any erroneous knives are recalled. Which means I probably won't be buying any more.

Can you share some pics or something? I believe you, but you're still just some random guy on the Internet.

EDIT: Here's how to post pics.

All credit to Spark and Esav Benyamin:

While paid members can upload pictures directly from their computers, anyone can open a photo hosting account.
I use www.photobucket.com . Download your pictures to the account and they give you a URL for each picture.
Use the fourth URL choice, with the tags already in place. Copy & Paste that in your post here.

Or as Spark says:
How can I post an image to the site? Simple: Go to [url]http://www.imgur.com[/url] and upload your image.
After uploading, select the BBCode option - it starts with [IMG]. Copy. Paste. Enjoy.

So they skeletonize them differently depending on blade steels? I'm so confused why.... we need pics

The lettering are so faded that my phone can't pick it up but very visible on a naked eye. Hang tight, I'll be purchasing a Canon eos 6d on the 15th (payday) lol. Although if I were in your shoes there's no validity of me taking a pic. Of a knife with a 3v logo without including a picture of the skeletonized tang (x-ray) correlating to the knife at the same time.

What I think is best is to make a video of me holding the knife and doing an xray at the same time.
