I purchased one of their knives, the Highland Special model with Ghost Green Jade G-10
handle, about 2 1/2 years ago. It was sitting in my collection until I went for a hike and I finally got an opportunity to use it. I cut a branch of a fallen tree and stripped the bark from it to make a walking stick. To my disappointment the edge had rolled like I never seen before on any of my knives and the worse part there was a nasty chip right in the middle of the blade. I used my EdgePro to restore the edge but couldn’t do much about the chip. Here is a photo I took with my phone.

Anyways, I got so frustrated that I put away the knife and forgot about it until recent thread that advised sending the knife for a warranty repair. I couldn’t find the BRKT email so I just used the phone number listed on their website. The man who picked up the phone told me in a calm voice just to mail the knife to the address listed on their website. The next day the knife was in the mail with included note where I explained once again what happened and suggested that possibly the blade did not get a proper heat treatment. I also noted that I did not want the metal to be removed across the full length of the blade to sharpen out the chip and rather see a slight recurve at the center of the blade to hide the chipped part.

According to the USPS tracking the knife got to their shop on 1/28/2011. As of today I did not get the knife nor did I hear from them. Should I give it some more time before calling again? I just don’t want to push and appear rude by calling too soon.

Give it a couple more weeks. I've got a Kershaw in for repair and their site said allow four to six weeks for a response. I'm sure BRKT will take care of it. Just give it some time. I've never heard a report of someone sending one back to them and not getting it back.

I'm thinking you're going to get a new knife, instead of your old one back. If they messed up the heat treat, they'll have to remove the handles to redo the heat treat. I believe they'll simply give you a new knife instead.

This is pretty typical of BRKT, actually. They will probably say it was ground too thin at the edge. If you'll do a search, this is far from the first BRKT knife that suffered some severe edge deformation during initial use.

Keep in mind that BRKT is a semi-custom shop, not a mass manufacturer. It is not as quick as pulling a replacement knife out of warehouse stacked with hundreds of identical knife models. It is also not unusual for any semi-custom maker to take a while longer to address returns/repairs, but BRKT is rock solid with their warranty- they will certainly do so.

The UPS brought the knife this morning :D
The invoice says Sharpen/Polish so it was not exchanged for a new one. Even though they did not put a recurve like I asked, they did a fantastic job on restoring it, putting the convex edge; I don't notice much of reduction in width of the blade due to metal removal. The knife has even satin finish better than it was new. I’m happy with the result just hoping I was wrong about the heat treat and it won’t affect the future usage.

I love my Barkies, but they are cutters, and I don't use them too hard, if I don't have to. They should be able to take some whittling though...
Glad they took care of you.

I own several Bark Rivers, and beyond some very small chipping easily fixed in sharpening, I've never had a blade fold on me like that.

Although I know from other forums that you're not the only one who's had that happen too. I've read that the problem isn't heat treat, but it may result from hand convexing and the edge is made too narrow.

Hopefully BRK&T reprofiled your blade at a better angle. Test it out and see how you go. If it continues to fold, you may have a lemon and most likely a heat treat issue. If so, I'd demand my money back or a new knife if I were you.

One consolation, at least it's warrantied for life.
