I needed a new Northstar. No, no. no. the old one didn;t break! I needed a new one because I didn't have one yet! And yes, my wife gets the same story ((( :D )))

Having been loyal to DLT since my first Barkie, I decided today to break tradition. It wasn;t easy but here's why:

I've seen (what I consider to be) DLT's main internet competitor in these forums for several months. He never flaunts his business. Whenever someone orders a knife from one of his competitors he praises them on making a good choice. He has even praised his competition as being "excellent to deal with". So, I ordered this knife from him:

I'm sure it'll arrive in due time and in fine condition. So....in advance I say.... Thanks Derrick! :D

Nice looking piece! I just ordered the one he had in Amboynia Burl. I like the way the online shopping software works on that site. After I placed my order, I decided I wanted the picture of that particular piece to use for my wallpaper so I could admire it while I was waiting for it to arrive. But when I went back to the Northstar page that one was no longer there. I thought "Where did it go?" and then I realized that hey, I just bought it so since it was no longer available it did not appear on the site any more. Now that's real time updating. If you see it, it is in stock!

Thanks for the orders guys...Zuchus, here is your picture so you can drool for a couple days. ;)

The Northstar is a great knife, and you two have some nice ones!

Bamboo is amazingly light weight as well as strong, and the amboynia is just beautiful stuff!

:thumbup::thumbup:

I hope you lke yours as well as I like mine!:):)

Best fixed blade I've ever owned. (Well, maybe except for my Bob Dozier:D)

The Bamboo doesn't photograph well (at least not by me or by BRKT) it is always overexposed. It is far more impressive in person.

I had my heart set on the maroon linen but, since I procrastinated, by the time I decided to order, it was gone (from both sites)!!. So then I was torn between the red linen and bamboo....enough said about that.

When it comes in I'll have a chance to make sure everything's allright and admire it for a few minutes, then Mama will whisk it away to some unknown hiding place where it'll gather dust until my birthday. Of course, sometime before then my job will be to convince her that I need a mini-Nothstar in red linen! (Think there'll be one available by then???) ((( :D )))

You should really like the Northstar, I recently got my Limited Edition version from Derrick and it is a very nice looking knife.

I like the look of the Northstar but not so keen on that loop at the end of the handle. Can it be ground off by Bark River?

Bark River says they'll grind it off. Unknown if you'll have to pay for that service. Or....you can hacksaw it off, grind it down, file it flush, and polish it with finer & finer grits of wet/dry.

Or....better yet..... order a custom version without the lanyard loop. I think knivesshipfree has some.

I'm not real keen on the end loop either. I have had good luck cutting the keyring loop off of my Alox SAKs using the cutting wheel of my Dremel tool and then sanding it down. I'll see if I feel up to the task on my Northstar (it's one thing to take your Dremel tool to a $20 knife, but to a $165 knife, well...) I might see about sending it to BRKT for the job.

Thanks for the picture, Derrick, it's now my wallpaper!

If you don't like the lanyard loop, I believe BRKT will take it off for the cost of shipping it back to you. They never squawk about working on their own knives--that is the kind of customer service they offer.

I personally like the NS better without the lanyard loop on it. I snagged one of the LEs, and it is perfect for me. If you think that is how you would like it, don't hesitate to contact the shop to send it in.

Anyone have any experience with turn around time on a barkie shipped back for service/modifications?

Something of that nature can vary from time to time, depending on their workload. Probably best to contact Bark River directly for a accurate answer.

Yes. Several months ago I sent back a Highland Special because one of the impala horn scales came unglued (they're not pinned). I called, made arrangements, sent the knife, and included a letter, not asking, but just suggesting that those glued-up slabs need pins to be more secure. They shipped it back with solid pins in it!

I think it took two weeks and change from day shipped to day received. I was happy with the work and turn-around time.

It depends on the nature of the work they are doing for you. If you are waiting for an exotic handle material, they might not have it in stock and it could take longer. If you just want a refinish/sharpening, AFAIK they run whatever they have about once a week.

I will second the suggestion of contacting the shop to get a time estimate.

My Northstar came about two weeks ago, and I really enjoy it. I've taken it out in the woods a couple of times and have used it around home on various materials, but I have not tried to really do anything "bushcrafty" with it yet. The spine works well with a firesteel. I spoiled the look of the curly maple by adding a Hi-Viz yellow paracord lanyard :barf:, but at least it will be easy to spot in the dark or on the ground. I threaded some more through the sheath grommets.:barf:

The lanyard loop on the butt seems redundant since there's now a hole as well. I have not decided yet if it bothers me enough to grind it off.

Stretch, how on Earth do you even decide which Barkie to use at this point?;)
