Bark River- who’s fault?

Even the big defenders of the brand can't help but spill their own horror stories.

Geez, who hasn't had to send one of these clunkers back?
What about my post made me a big defender of their brand? I said I’m not trying to defend whatever shady shit Mike Stewart has done in the past, and that I’ve had problems with them too, while also stating the fact that I have used them, I enjoy them and that I think they do make good knives. Why does everything have to be black and white?

It appears to me that you have a bit of a history, rising to the defense of BRK.

Which is fine, but you are certainly defending them, isn't that what a recommendation ultimatly is?

Superb video representation, the way the light warbles over the steel nearing the edge. I would be curious to know the thickness of the steel at the thickest point where the steel exhibits deflection.
Very interested in any update status.

By contrast, I know this blade was abused on this day. It however was straight and true upon extraction :)

I'm with you. I don't know much about the man but have absolutely enjoyed, and continue to regularly enjoy, many of the knives he's built.

If someone says “what’s a good ~$250 Bushcraft knife” I will recommend a Bark River because my own experience has been mostly positive and I’ve carried their knives on me through some pretty shitty places and they’ve never failed me, even a shitty grind was really more cosmetic than anything. I’m not saying that they haven’t screwed people over in the past or put out knives with mislabeled steel or bad heat treatments. Defending them would be me discounting all the problems people had with them. I don’t know what “history” you’re talking about, I hardly post on this forum, and even here, I’ve posted questioning whether I got a knife in the correctly labeled steel, on their own Facebook page, I’ve called them out on poorly done grinds, bad finishes, and their poor reaction to criticism. Once again, nuance is a hell of a thing, it’s perfectly possible for me to like the product and express so without actually defending them against all the accusations that have been leveled their way over the years.

I don't think the OP was asking for a recommendation for a bushcraft knife.

Way to misunderstand the point of my post, my point was that the closest I have come to "defending" them was by saying I've had good experiences with my own knives, and this wasn't even on this thread. I have not once posted in this thread trying to give the OP a recommendation on what knife to buy and the fact you seem to so deliberatley misunderstand and reply to only that one part of my whole post tells me everything I need to know about your intention to converse in good faith.

So if you aren't here to give the OP advice, I'm confused. I feel like we pretty much have his problem solved, don't we?

I read this entire thread before posting in, very curious to the actual specifics of the situ.
How was the OP problem solved ???

I am not interested in opinions of M.S. or B.R.K., interested in this specific knife as it relates to the OP.

I was commenting in reply to someone else saying that even though Mike Stewart does some scummy shit, he makes good knives. I was simply agreeing with the guy as a side comment in this thread, that reply wasn't in response to the OP. I then took issue with you call me a "defender" of Bark River, because I am just as willing to call them on their shit as anyone else, I just so happen to have had mostly good experiences with their knives, that in of itself shouldn't be interpreted as me trying to defend them.

Sir, we established that the OP's knife was likely made of cat litter and chicken wire and he should contact the maker and demand satisfaction.

Hmmm ..., sounds to me that we have an antagonist in thread.
I had hoped you were above this :-/
Appreciate your honesty ;-)

Chopping 1”-2” diameter wood seems like something a 12” blade that’s 3/16” thick should handle no problem. I’ve done it plenty with reground Cold Steel machetes and the only one that showed any damage was less than 0.01” behind the edge on a 5-7 degree per side primary edge on a 16” blade. Drop the length to 12” and raise the thickness to 0.015” and no damage after years of use.

BRK has had reports like this for over a decade. I’ll never own one. There are only about 5 brands that fall into that group for me, but if any were a gift, you’d have to pay me to take them.
