Barlow Challenge

Ben, you're a man after my own heart! I am the Teaching Pastor at my church, and my everyday EDC is a #77 Washington Jack in antique yellow bone! I really like the long spear and pen combo, and the overall "thinness" of the knife in my pocket. I wish you all the best and Godspeed in your studies, sir!

Regards,
Ron

If I had a Barlow I might participate.
My grandma's got a Barlow in one of Her toolboxes that I may ask about ( it may or not be a pos )
All I know about it from seeing it once is that it has maroon colored ( possibly delrin ) scales and says barlow on the bolster, and likely has stainless blades.

While I'm taking a week or so off from challenges given how quickly life has accelerated again, I did revert to my usual habits yesterday (which are "Barlows, Barlows everywhere!" :o) so I figured I might share a photo.

Wow, that 494 is gorgeous! I would love to get mine rehandled in walnut or ebony. But for now, its a gorgeous 72* here in North Carolina, and I have some tests to study for. I had to snag this one shot though...

Hmmm, I think my next project will be to buy a hollow handle barlow and make new liners and scales, as I havent ever seen a non hollow barlow locally, and all these pretty pictures got me yearning for one! Plus I could make one with dual master blades, sheepsfoot and pen maybe?

Thanks, it took me so long to find a "worthy" 494 that when I found that one I knew it had to be mine. Yours is in such nice shape that it would be a true stunner with some natural handles, though personally I'd suggest finding one that might have issues with handles or other inconsequential "problems" because yours is such a nice example of the Delrin Bokers that it might be worth keeping as-is. I'll keep an eye out for one, just in case.

Jeff (jprime84) has had me wanting to pursue exactly that kind of mod using one of my old hollow-bolstered Barlows -- a ground-up resto/cleaning (even banging the liners flat if need be) using a nice set of Providence or Imperial carbon blades, then rebolstering/rehandling the works with nice materials. I'm also kicking around the idea of doing the same with an old asymmetrical-bolstered Queen Barlow with hidden scale damage that I didn't find out about before the seller had a chance to vanish from the face of the earth, though in that case I'd want to keep all the hardware and just put some nice bone or stag on it.

I'd feel a lot more confident about it if you posted some good "in progress" photos and dropped a few pro-tips along the way. :D

Tsar, I'd be more than happy to help you, as I myself am new to it all and you are one of the nicest folks to join the porch lately. Im proud to call you a friend, and as a friend, my mind is yours to pick. Pictures, skype sessions showing jigs and how to fix things, whatever you want!
I'm almost done shaping the scales on my first assembly, polishing and sharpening are the final steps.

Very much appreciated, Connor! Knowing myself as I do, I will likely end up diving headfirst into an old Barlow only to find myself at an impasse. It's probably the best way to learn, especially if one plans on working on more valuable knives later on. I'm sure I will quickly develop a slew of questions that will make you wish you'd never offered. ;) :D

Looking forward to how that fella works out, too! Isn't Micarta a relatively difficult material to work with?

(Man I've gotta stop peeking into the GEC production photos so often. They're giving me ideas that are way beyond my current capabilities... :o).

Micarta is a bit tougher than wood, but really not by much. It is longer wearing imo so sanding takes more time, but thats a good thing more than bad (taking off too much is much worse compared to taking a few seconds more to shape). Otherwise to get a good finish, you just gotta have it really wet while sanding.
Looking at GEC's offerings will help you get some ideas I think, but also look at Glenn(bad) and other modders work.

I'm so close to being done with this one I can't hardly stand it.

My Sunday Barlow .

 A jigged Case is the one newer Barlow that has managed to elude me. I nearly took the plunge and paid too much for one but ultimately decided against it. I figure with enough patience one will come up. Thanks for showing us yours!

Another day in the life of a Barlow toting theology student. I have spent the day reading Athanasius' work, De Incarnatio. To cap the whole thing off, I'm about to meet my girlfriend for a date! The Barlow has thus far cut a few loose strings, opened a new head-set for my computer, and sliced an apple. Decided to touch up the sheepsfoot on the old stone my grandfather gave me before I left for school.

All I got out of the wife was she spent a little over $100 bucks for it [a dealer without a BF dealer membership].

UPDATE- So I may not have been totally honest... The Boker as not been my only knife. As a supplement, I have been carrying this Leatherman Squirt PS-4. But, the more I carry this little thing, the more I find that I do not need it. I am slowly coming back to the idea that the Victorinox Classic or Rambler is all that I would ever need for a keychain knife. (I can always move that Leatherman from the truck to my messenger bag...) Maybe when I have some money free to spend, (I don't foresee that anytime soon), I could pick up the little red knife to simplify my carry even more.

This is what happens when Greek becomes too much to handle. You get bored sitting and translating the Nicene Creed, so you make feather sticks from pencils... At least the Barlow is sharp!

The past two days I have carried my Taylor made OT Barlow and cut up my pork chops and cheddar cheese I had for lunch today. I also used it to open a bag of David's Sunflower seeds.
