Basque Axe from Lamnia (!)

You seem to think a video of me will somehow negate the fact you made a claim that was just incorrect, and that you are a relative newb in the world of actual ax use. Deadboxhero. The facts remain.

Snowballsnowflake -- If you end up wanting to give a longer handle a go and need a little help sourcing the wood I have a bunch of hickory blanks and I could design and rough-cut a blank for you. All I'd need would be a few clear pictures and one or two simple measurements. :)

I've gotta feeling he could source his own hickory and make the handle himself.

Oops sorry- I was referring to Woodcraft, though maybe that's true of Snoballsnowflake too.

I'll just have to take your word for it.

I wouldn't know if Woodcraft could source his own wood. He's on my ignore list but in the past he claimed to have a huge woodlot full of oak and a video camera, but never posted photos of the lot or videos of himself doing any chopping to prove it, even when pointedly asked. Maybe he's posted such since after I put him on ignore, but it's unconfirmed to me. He's in Maine like I am and we mostly have ash, beech, oak, and maple, though those would all work. I've not tried maple for a handle but I seem to recall seeing a photo of an old Snow & Nealley catalog where they listed hickory, oak, or maple as their handle options, and I'm willing to bet at least the oak and maple were locally sourced. Supposedly we have some limited quantity of hickory in Maine but I've not personally seen it any of the places I've lived or woods-bummed.

I made the offer to Snowballsnowflake mostly 'cause I know it's a slip-fit eye that off-the-shelf handles won't fit. Not everyone has ready access to hickory boards and a bandsaw, but it's pretty easy to get your hands on a spoke shave and rasp. :D

Thanks for your reply. I'll have to keep you in mind for handle blanks. I have bought other tools from your store.

For the record, it's possible to buy boards direct from House Handle but the cost of the shipping is the killer. It's only really economical if you buy a whole bunch, so then you're spending over $100 or so for the blanks plus shipping. By contrast, by me buying in bulk it reduces the per-unit shipping expense and then by drafting a proper design for the particular axe and cutting them to a rough blank reduces the dimensions and weight for shipping to the end user when you're talking about just a couple of units. So some might prefer the one route, some might prefer the other. I don't actively advertise the service at this point in time, but do like to make it known that I have the capacity to help folks out if they're worried about finding a replacement handle for an oddball axe of theirs.

Here's one I did a while back and have been gradually finishing out. The main length of the handle points straight towards the center of gravity and was digitally designed.

My offer still stands 42. ANYTIME you want to come put your money where your mouth is I will set it up. I will even purchase 8×8s so there is absolutely no doubt it is fair. Softwood and hardwood, your flat sided Italian ax against my American felling ax. Not a race. We will count chops to get the job done.

Lol, you won't do it because you already know the result. And no 42 I will not swing your ax for you.(You can continue to get the inexperienced to swing and advertise for you, lol)

you can't even operate a camera, I wouldn't give anyone a hard time about an axe bro.

you talk too much.

Lol, I just posted a video of you flailing with an ax so dangerously and without any clue what you were doing it is actually scary to watch. And it was A, not that long ago. And B. You are trying to pass out opinions and advice on axes like you did not just pick up the bug a short while ago. I ain't your bro.

You made a foolish claim. You got called out. Man up.

I'd like to get my hands on some more regional styles of poll-less axes to see how they compare and contrast with one another and will have to eventually pick one of these up. A shame the manufacturer doesn't want to bother with selling to US retailers because I'd gladly carry their stuff (they also sell some nifty forged scythe rings and wedges for hafting Euro-style scythes.) That being said, with what I've heard about Spain's bureaucratic red tape I can't blame him, either. I also want to obtain a good example or three of Brazil, de tumba, and media labor patterns from Latin America to give them a spin. Would be nice to find some old Collins ones in "user" condition down the road. I enjoy my Italians so much I don't often reach for my Americans anymore, and I love those too.

Damn! I was just posting a photo of an axe that is not readily available in the USA that I found interesting enough to purchase! Being the cheap SOB that I am, of course I'd love to take up your offer of a free custom made handle! What specs do you need? Many thanks!

Does anyone else have any services available? I'd love some custom made leather sheaths for my Ochsenkopf Rotband collection. The sheaths that come with them are junk.

Sorry if there was any misunderstanding--it wouldn't be free! :o But for what you get the price would be more than fair given the time involved, I think. It'd be more than an off-the-shelf hardware store handle, but uniquely tuned to your particular axe and still less than the average cost of a replacement handle from Gransfors. I have to take the time to do the digital drafting work and templating, and I charge less than minimum wage for the time spent on the task.
